With the rapid development of the urbanization process, the spatial expansion of construction land has become increasingly severe in China.Particularly in the coastal developed areas, the phenomenon of the increase of both urban and rural construction land has gradually appeared. This article took Jinjiang city in Fujian province as the research area, and used the four sets of Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI/TIRS image in 1996,2003,2009,and 2016 as the main data source.First of all,the maximum likelihood supervised classification was chosen to classify the remote sensing images. In addition, the urban and rural construction land in the last two decades were gained.Secondly, the spatial pattern evolution of urban and rural construction land was analyzed respectively from the aspects of the landscape pattern change, variation of spatial-temporal area, spatial differentiation evolution and spatial extension mode evolution. In the third place, from the angles of government policy and planning, social and economic factors, natural terrain factors, traffic factors as well as the driving factors of spatial pattern of urban and rural construction land were analyzed.Fourthly, four ecological environmental elements, including greenness, wetness, dryness and heat, were extracted to construct the remote sensing ecological index which was used to evaluate the ecological environment quality in Jinjiang. The main results are shown as follow:(1)Judging from the landscape pattern,in the past two decades, the urban and rural construction land of Jinjiang have achieved outstanding development, the inner connectivity has been increasing, the boundary shape of urban and rural construction land has been gradually ruled, and urban and rural construction land has aggregated the distribution in space.Judging from the scale of land use,in the past 20 years, the area, extension speed, and extension intensity of urban and rural construction land are increasing, and the spatial distribution of increased urban and rural construction land are uneven between towns in the Jinjiang city.In terms of the spatial differentiation,in the past two decades, the area and extension intensity of urban and rural construction land are higher in the north and lower in the south. The hot-spots of extension intensity have gradually transformed from dispersed to centralized and its position also has gradually transferred from the inner city to the Quanzhou bay.In terms of the extension mode, growth mode of the urban and rural construction land is given priority to the edge-extension pattern. The extension patter of infilling and outlying is secondary. However, the area of edge-expansion pattern is declining, and the area of infilling and outlying extension pattern showed a rising trend, which means that the use pattern of urban and rural construction land tends to be more intensive in Jinjiang city.(2)The study on the driving forces of urban and rural construction land spatial expansion indicated that the government's decision-making,social economy, natural terrain and traffic play an essential role in the spatial pattern evolution of urban and rural construction land.Amongst the social and economic factors, the increase of non-agricultural population has posed the greatest influence on the spatial extension of urban and rural construction land.(3)In two decades, ecological quality in Jinjiang city showed the trend of gradual degradation, and the process of degradation is very similar to the process of the spatial expansion. The evolution of urban and rural construction land,as well as the ecological degradation regions are mainly distributed in the industrial developed towns or industrial parks.Meanwhile, the ecological degradation regions have gradually transferred from the inner city to coastal areas, especially in the Quanzhou bay,and the ecological regions are mainly located in Qingyang sub-district,Meiling sub-district and Chidian town. The result of the regression analysis indicated that the expansion intensity of the urban and rural construction land was negatively correlated with the change of ecological quality.
