| China’s continuous development and improving economy has seen a boom in the spending in leisure activities in recent years. This in turn has driven the rapid expansion in tourism, within which, the unique qualities of agro-industrial parks have proved quite an attraction to tourists.Agro-industrial parks, along with its in-built tourism elements, not only accelerates agricultural modernisation effectively, but has significant effects in the upgrading of agro-industrial infrastructures, promoting the integration of primary, secondary and tertiary industries.Innovative ideas are therefore borne within this drive of agro-industrial tourism to further the amalgamation of social, economic and ecological growth. Therefore,it is imperative,in the name of implementing China’s rural revitalisation strategy and innovation development strategy, along with the need to address the ‘agriculture, rural areas and farmers’ issues and novel rural planning, that we re-examine the tactical pathway of agro-industrial park developments with a fresh perspective. This paper aims to explore the problems encountered during the development of agroindustrial parks in China,by the way of firstly, carefully defining their functions, types and entities, and then utilising a combination of innovation theory, agricultural location theory,agro-ecological theory, sustainable development theory and industrial integration models to further analyse this.It was then found that the major problems exist in the form of technological shortcomings, lack of funding, insufficient value added properties to the development and lack of innovations. This is a reflection of the current states of the local economy, the employment policy of innovative talents and the state’s developmental strategy of agro-industrial parks. We then further studied two classical examples of agro-industrial tourism in Yangling Agricultural High-tech Industry Demonstration Zone and Beidahuang Modern Agriculture Park.Through this,we were able to propose some innovative guiding principles for the future of agro-industrial tourism, that is,“on the basis of culture, linked by the emotive attachment to the land, the vision should encompass both external beauty and personal betterment, whilst remaining in the remit of agricultural innovation”.Looking into the future,we believe that the development of agro-industrial tourism should embrace the trinity of production, ecology and living standard. The incorporation of this and ‘agriculture plus’,amplified by industrialisation and fulfilling specialised branding strategy, would ensue a novel perspective into the future development in agro-industrial tourism. |
