The Communist Party of China put forward the strategy of revitalizing the countryside on the 19 th session of national congress of the communist party of China, and took solving the problems of "agriculture, countryside and farmers" as the top priority of the Party’s work.China’s rural population accounts for nearly half of the national population, but the consumption level of rural residents is only one third of that of urban residents.Expanding rural domestic demand and stimulating rural residents’ consumption is an important way to realize the rural residents’ living prosperity and the strategy of rural revitalization. It is also an important driving force to give full play to the basic role of consumption in economic development and promote the economic transformation and development of our country.Since the reform and opening up,the process of industrialization and urbanization in China has been accelerating, and the development has attracted a large number of rural labor force to transfer to the city, which has resulted in great changes in the rural population structure and the phenomenon of hollowing out the rural population.Population hollowing characteristics may bring about changes in consumption characteristics, consumption patterns and so on,thus affecting household consumption. Therefore, the impact of rural population hollowing on rural residents’ consumption can not be ignored.Discussing the impact of rural population hollowing on rural consumption and putting forward policy suggestions for this phenomenon is of great significance for stimulating rural residents’ consumption, releasing rural market potential and promoting China’s economic development.Firstly, the domestic and foreign literature on the phenomenon of rural population hollowing out and the impact of this phenomenon on rural residents’ consumption are sorted out as the research basis.Secondly, based on consumption function theory,Preventive Savings theory, family savings demand model, family fertility decision-making theory, family life cycle theory,Baudrillard consumption society theory and psychological account theory, and combined with the analysis of the current situation of rural residents’ consumption and population hollowing in China, including the consumption comparison of different hollowing family types, the hollowing of rural population is analyzed. The influence mechanism and path of urbanization on rural residents’ consumption. Finally, based on the field micro-survey data of Jingzhou City in Hubei Province,Yueyang City in Hunan Province,Liuzhou City in Guangxi Province and Ningbo City in Zhejiang Province, the following conclusions are drawn through a series of studies:Firstly,China’s rural areas have the phenomenon of population hollowing out.Under this background, different family types in rural areas have different consumption characteristics. It can be seen that the consumption characteristics of the families with male labor force going out and only the left-behind elderly, women and children are lower overall income and consumption level, higher consumption of medical and health care projects, mainly concentrated in food, housing and health care projects.Among them, the consumption level of Left-behind elderly households is the lowest, mainly for food and medical consumption. For other types of consumption items, the consumption level of Left-behind women households is relatively low,and the consumption level of various sub-items other than medical care is relatively high. The consumption demand of residence and transportation communications is the highest, and the consumption demand of medical care is the lowest.Secondly, the proportion of children in the family has a positive impact on the consumption of rural households, and influences consumption through the characteristics of their own consumption demand. The proportion of the elderly has a negative impact on the household consumption of rural residents, which is in line with the actual situation of the elderly in rural areas in China. It is consistent with the reality of the decline in income level and income sources of the elderly left behind in rural areas, the motivation of saving preventively and bequeathed, and the conservative consumption habits of thrifty. The proportion of women in the family has a negative impact on household consumption of rural residents, but the significant level is low.Rural left-behind women are more affected by ratcheting effect, and their consumption habits are more conservative.Third, the proportion of children has a significant positive impact on the main factors of clothing and education consumption. The proportion of the elderly has a significant negative impact on household food consumption, life services and service consumption, and has a significant positive impact on health care consumption. There is also a significant positive correlation between the proportion of women and health care consumption.Fourthly, hollow population structure will have a negative impact on household consumption of rural residents in China. The uncertainties of income and expenditure faced by rural residents in China have a greater impact on consumption demand, such as education expenditure and clothing expenditure, which impels rural residents to save preventively. To a certain extent, this also provides an explanation for the current situation that China’s consumption rate is significantly lower than the world level, and that consumption demand and pull are insufficient.Based on this, this paper puts forward relevant policy suggestions: improving the rural environment, alleviating the hollow situation of rural population;improving population development strategy, continuing to implement the policy of liberalizing two children in an all-round way;continuing to promote supply-side reform, improving the rural consumption environment;eliminating the uncertainty faced by rural residents, changing their consumption concepts, insisting on establishing and improving the social security system, and vigorously expanding agriculture. The rural consumer credit market should broaden the sources of income for rural residents, promote the growth of rural residents’ income, and then stimulate the growth of consumption, realize the overall revitalization of rural areas and promote the economic development of our country.
