As mentioned in some mathematic-education related researches,the students’ concept of mathematic is closely related to their experience in mathematics learning and problem solving.Therefore,this study will mainly focus on the mathematical concepts of the first year students in Shanghai High School.To validate the previous research,this study also analyzes the mathematical concepts of high school students in depth,and explores the relationship between mathematics concepts,gender and mathematics scores of high school students.The aim of this research is to help the mathematics teachers and researchers understand the role of concepts in mathematics study and polish up their teaching skills.The high school mathematic learners are also supposed to be benefited by this research,as learning different concepts will help them achieve higher performance in their mathematics study.In this research,the respondents are 323 students from eight classes in a senior high school in Shanghai.Based on the questionnaire investigation and phenomenon description analysing,this study maps the mathematical concepts of high school students in Shanghai.To expand the sample size,this report also introduces the scale proposed by Crawford in 1994 on the measurement of mathematics concepts of college students.Benefited by the scale,this research is able to investigating the more precise differences among every mathematics score groups and gender groups.The concepts of the first year high school students are grouped into the following ten types: 1.Mathematics is numbers,figures,rules,and formulas.2.Mathematics is the addition,subtraction,multiplication,and division arithmetic operations.3.Mathematics is to solve the math problems in the textbooks.4.Mathematics is to solve problems in daily life.5.Mathematics is the exploration of mathematical rules.6.Mathematics is to construct the mathematical models.7.Mathematics is a logical mindset.8.Mathematics is the logic tool to solve mathematical problems.9.Mathematics is an understanding of the real world.10.Mathematics is a continuous exploration of the real world.Further analyzing sorts these ten types to six main focused areas: elements,calculations,tools,modeling,abstract thinking,and understanding with exploration.As a conclusion,the research finds out that there is no non-significant conceptional difference between the gender groups.However,among the score groups,the concept divergence is remarkable.The students with lower mathematics scores tend to have discrete mathematical concepts,while those with higher mathematics scores are more likely to keep broad mathematical concepts.Who are in the middle score groups,shows the propensity of more applied and modeled concept.
