Classical novels are the crystallization of the wisdom of ancient scholars.Through reading classical novels, students can understand the social and historical landscape of ancient China. Moreover, the rich ideological connotations and language style in classical novels can enhance students’ humanistic quality and Chinese core competencies. Therefore, classical novels possess greater teaching value.Since classical novels are usually too long, they mainly appear in middle school Chinese texts in the form of excerpts, dramatically destroying the integrity of character images. In addition, since classical novels were written a long time ago, students have many problems in the process of reading. In the process of teaching, teachers should resort to extended reading to help students further appreciate classical novels. However,in real teaching, some teachers fail to give adequate attention to extended reading and fail to gain a comprehensive understanding on extended reading.Students usually cannot truly understand the deep-rooted connotations of classical novels and extended reading fails to play its due role in the teaching of classical novels. Therefore, this study applies extended reading in the teaching of classical novels in middle school and forms the systematic and strategic system for extended reading in the teaching of classical novels, providing references to middle school teachers and students. The preface includes the research origin, literature review, research significance, research methods and content, and research innovation.Chapter One introduces the concepts of extended reading and classical novels. The thesis introduces the concepts of extended reading and classical novels and proposes the necessity of extended reading. As for the necessity of extended reading, first of all,it is the requirement of the “new curriculum standard”.Secondly,it is the requirement of “greater Chinese” education philosophy.Thirdly,it is the requirement of “expanding vision and deepening theories”.Finally,it is the requirement of cultivating students’ ability to use language and words.Chapter Two mainly investigates and analyzes the current status of extended reading in the teaching of classical novels. This chapter firstly selects excerpts from MOE-compiled middle school Chinese textbooks and PEP-edition high school Chinese textbooks for compulsory and optional courses, conducts a statistical analysis, and then thereby summarizes the current status of classical novels in the text selection of middle school Chinese textbooks. Then a questionnaire survey is conducted on students and teachers in four schools in Guizhou province. Some problems in the current teaching have been found through the questionnaire survey.Chapter Three focuses on the study of teaching strategies for extended reading in the teaching of classical novels,In view of the problems in the survey, the thesis starts from classical novels, takes teaching cases as the carrier, and applies such extended reading teaching methods as “lead-in”,“comment on people and the world”,“comparative reading”,and “thematic extension” to propose some exploratory suggestions.Based on field survey and data analysis, the thesis tentatively proposes teaching strategies on extended reading in the teaching of classical novels. The topic selection is innovative and it has also considered the real situation of classical novel teaching in middle school Chinese course. This thesis tries to provide some basis for teachers and students to rely on in teaching activities to gradually make classical novel reading teaching more targeted and effective.
