| After the Renaissance and the reformation,European countries established modern countries one after another through several centuries.After the opium war forced China to open its doors,China gradually began to explore the road to establish a modern country.However,how to understand the construction of China’s modern state is not an easy task.Among the scholars who discuss China’s modern state,Philip Alden Kuhn is undoubtedly the best.Although his work is not much,but his research has broken the consistent research model,and provides a new thinking.What is the "modern state" ? How did it come into being in China? This is the central problem that Philip Alden Kuhn discusses emphatically.He believed that the formation of the modern state has a variety of possible paths,its form have different characteristics,there is no definite rule on this discussion.To understand modern China,we need to go back to the historical study of the social and political changes in the late Qing Dynasty.He emphasized that the elements of China’s modern state construction were not only generated from external crises,but also from various domestic crises that plagued the late Qing empire.Therefore,in his opinion,the origin of the modern state needs to be found in China’s own ideological tradition.While focusing on the formation of China’s modern state,Philip Alden Kuhn focused his discussion on the "fundamental issues",and put forward some very insightful views.This paper is divided into five parts: in addition to the introduction,the other four parts have sorted out the theoretical sources,basic views,theoretical characteristics and theoretical analysis of Philip Alden Kuhn’s formation of China’s modern state view,forming a systematic and complete interpretation framework.The first part comprehensively summarizes the domestic and foreign research on Philip Alden Kuhn’s academic thought.The second part analyzes Philip Alden Kuhn’s ideological origin of China’s modern state view from three aspects.The third part focus on political participation and state power,political competition and public interests,political control and national finance,and specifically discusses Philip Alden Kuhn’s understanding of China’s modern state construction.The fourth part,from the perspective of comparison,highlights the characteristics of Alden Kuhn’s modern Chinese national view.The fifth part is a comprehensive evaluation of Alden Kuhn’s modern Chinese state view.In general,Alden Kuhn’s research brings us such enlightenment--we mustreturn to the actual historical situation to think about the origin and development of the country,pay attention to the modern factors in the Chinese tradition,and take the development path in line with China’s actual situation. |
