| We live in an marine century now. Since the born of sea-power theory, most countries in the world come to realize the importance of what ocean means to their economic development and national security, and the military significance of ocean becomes more obvious, especially those coastal ones, which are striving for ocean resources fiercer and fiercer. As a country concentrating on overland development historically, China is transferring to a sea-land compound entity, which corresponds to its need of geo-political circumstances. It should be a matter of course for China developing such a marine strategy, but now it’s encountering some denouncement and distrust-nationalism behavior. This thesis aims to analyze how western scholars cognize Chinese navy strategy through different perspectives of nationalism, explain the bias of western scholars’ Chinese navy strategy after the Second World War, point out the popular nationalism theory is actually China threat theory.Firstly, this article expounds western scholar’s statements and evaluations of Chinese navy development objectively. They consider the performance of Chinese navy as a nationalism behavior. China tries to achieve two goals by inciting nationalism:obtain a great power status and gain perfect international prestige; obtain a leading status in Asia-Pacific area replacing the United States. They point out five reasons why China develops navy vigorously:1. Providing military choices for resolving Taiwan issue; 2.Extending china’s sphere of influence in South China Sea and undermining the advantage of the U.S.; 3, Increasing China’s influence in some pivotal straits and sea lanes; 4, China’s prestige strategy; 5,History lessons. China develops navy vigorously performs as follows:1, China’s plan of aircraft carriers.2, Anti-Access strategy; 3, China’s high speed military expenditure; 4, China’s anti-pirates activities in the Gulf of Aden. Meanwhile, the development of Chinese navy influences the security of the United States to some degree. Some scholars think that the development of Chinese navy would change the current international order, threat the leadership of the U.S. in Asia-Pacific and its maritime security, challenge the relationship between the U.S. and its allies, and most likely cause arms race. Other scholars think that there’s no need for the U.S. to worry about Chinese navy, because the gap between Chinese navy and the U.S. navy is still very large.Secondly, this thesis analyses the connotation of nationalism from western and eastern perspectives, points out that both sides agree that nationalism means national independence and unity since its born. But nationalism in western perspective is becoming prominent derogatory sense after World War Ⅱ. It was regarded as activator of warfare and human disaster. The born of Chinese nationalism comes from the rapid economic development and comprehensive power of China, and arouses worry of the U.S.Thirdly, this article elaborates the rationality of Chinese navy strategy in our own view, that is,1, the importance of geopolitics; 2, Protecting our national ocean territory from invasion; 3, Safeguarding the security of international energy transportation; 4, Guaranteeing personal safety of overseas Chinese and national property security. At last, I summarize the whole article and draw the conclusion:China won’t challenge the leading status of the U.S., not to mention replace it. The gap between Chinese navy and the U.S. navy is still very large. The statement of Chinese navy strategy is a kind of nationalism behavior is actually "the theory of China threat", and the development of Chinese navy is definitely not nationalism behavior. The view about Chinese navy development of western scholars is unilateral. |
