The Bird-and-Flower Painting, which represents not only the culture of traditional Chinese philosophy and thinking, but also has deep relationship with the anthropological development of Chinese dialectic thinking as well."Branch-Folding"is a very important drawing structure and technique in the Bird-and-Flower painting. This technique originated from the Tang Dynasties Period, and became popular during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The development of Branch-Folding technique is an important contribution to the history of Bird-and-Flower Painting in China, especially to the enhancement of drawing technique.By using this Branch-Folding method, artists can show the big picture through a lens of tiny creatures, which reflects the classical philosophical work of both Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu such that simplicity is always recommended. In this essay, the Branch-Folding technique during the Song Dynasty will be introduced, with an emphasis on the artistic expression called“obtaining and seeing the big picture through the lens of tiny creatures" and on the characteristic analysis of the artworks. Moreover, how the author of this defending thesis got the inspirations of painting from studying the Branch-Folding artworks of Song Dynasty and how this is been used in personal drawings will be discussed as well. The major component of this essay has the following three parts.Firstly, the development of the Branch-Folding technique was introduced in order to better understand its significant impact for the traditional Bird-and-Flower drawing in China.Secondly, the artistic expression and characters from the pieces of work in Song dynasty is also included, especially the analysis of this technique via the systemic perspective and art aesthetic perspective. Finally,a demonstration of personal artworks inspired by this technique will be illustrated at the end.
