Reading is an important way for people to obtain information.Reading plays an important role in improving students' English ability and promoting their overall development.Due to the limited teaching time in reading course,the extracurricular reading in language learning is very important and necessary.Junior high school stage is an important period of forming teenagers' reading habit.The thesis aims to investigate the status quo of English extracurricular reading of students in junior middle school,and to cultivate and improve their reading ability based on the theory of learning motivation,autonomous learning and Krashen's input hypothesis.Taking predecessors' research results and the real condition of No.1 Railway Middle School in Panyu District in Guangzhou into considering,the author carries out an investigation of 657 students and 9 teachers about present situation of students' English extracurricular reading by using the method of questionnaire and interviews.It mainly involves the following aspects: the attitude and motivation of students in extracurricular reading,the amount of extracurricular reading,the criterion of choosing extracurricular reading materials,extracurricular reading strategies and reading habits,reading effectiveness and reading obstacles,teachers' attitudes,guidance and participation towards students' extracurricular reading and so on.The thesis tries to solve the following problems:(1)What is the present situation of English extracurricular reading of students in middle school ?(2)What is the attitude and participation of the teachers in English extracurricular reading activities of the students ?(3)How to improve and promote students' English extracurricular reading from the perspective of teachers?According to the survey data analysis,the following results are obtained:(1)The current situation of English extracurricular reading of students concerned in this paper is not optimistic.Students generally believed that extracurricular reading can improve their English level.Due to the heavy academic burden,there appear some specific problems:utilitarian reading purposes,less reading time,single reading material,lack of readingstrategies and skills,bad reading habits,and lack of planning and reflection after reading.(2)Although the attitude of the teacher towards extracurricular reading is positive,because of the heavy teaching burden and few experience of guiding extracurricular reading,its guidance to students is mainly limited to recommending reading materials.The teachers in Grade Two carry out the extracurricular reading the best;as a result,students in Grade Two are the most enthusiastic about extracurricular reading.However,due to the lack of supervision,feedback and checking of extracurricular reading,the overall reading effect is not very optimistic.As a result,the author believes that the key element to carry out English extracurricular reading is the teacher.From the aspects of teachers,the thesis puts forward some suggestions on how to solve these problems: teachers have to strengthen the basic knowledge teaching in class,participate fully in and guide students' extracurricular reading,choose proper extracurricular reading materials,cultivate students' efficient reasonable reading strategies and good reading habits,establish a diversified supervision mechanism and tracking files of extracurricular reading.This study can offer some reference for the teachers in terms of guiding English extracurricular reading and promote English extracurricular reading ability of the students concerned in this paper.Meanwhile,it has practical significance for the future study of English extracurricular reading.
