Pomegranate is a popular motif frequently used in Tang decorative art.It contains two main types: complex pomegranate pattern and representational pomegranate pattern.Complex pomegranate pattern, which compounded from acanthus design, has been shaped in the early Tang Dynasty and tends to be more and more realistic.Representational pomegranate pattern goes popular in the second half of the 8th century in gold and silver decoration. The two styles converge in some degree, both of which highlight the botanical features of pomegranate and lay a realistic foundation for later ones. The complex origins of pomegranate patterns lead to the time discrepancy between its form and significance. At the same time, the absence of accurate symbolic significance leaves ample scope for the application of pomegranate patterns in different scenes. It is of great importance that we should view the development of patterns and designs as a part of art history, for they are the reflection of cultural interchange.
