This article collected,collated and researched the jewelry materials unearthed in the tombs from prehistoric to Tang Dynasty in Xinjiang.Through sorting statistics,as of 2018,more than 400 pieces of jewelry have been unearthed,including four categories of headwear,earring,necklace and hand ornament.There are two kinds of headwear,hairpin and hairpin,the main neck ornament is necklace,and the hand ornament includes ring,bangle and bracelet.First of all,according to the texture and function,these jewelry materials are classified.On this basis,combined with the chronological relics,tomb shapes and carbon 14 data,this paper analyzes the use age of jewelry,and the jewelry unearthed from the prehistory to the Tang Dynasty was divided into five development stages:the 20th century BC-the end of the 11th century BC,the 10th century BC-Spring and Autumn,Warring States-Western Han Dynasty,Eastern Han Dynasty-Wei Jin,Sui and Tang Dynasties.Then the article summarizes the characteristics of the use of jewelry in different stages.From the perspective of distribution range and unearthed quantity,the first stage is approximately the Bronze Age in Xinjiang,which is the initial period of using jewelry;the second to the fourth stage are the development period of jewelry,which include the early Iron Age in Xinjiang to Wei Jin;the fifth stage includes the Sui and Tang dynasties,which shows a decline of using jewelry.Secondly,according to the distribution of the cemetery where the jewelry is located,this paper compared the appearance of jewelry in different natural geographical areas in Xinjiang at various stages and the changes at different stages.By observing the types and shapes of jewelry,we can see that there are close relations among various regions in Xinjiang,between Xinjiang and Central Plains,and between Xinjiang and foreign countries.At the end of the article,the gender differences in the use of jewelry were observed from three aspects of time,region and quantity.Combined with the analysis of other funeral objects that were released together,it was believed that although the funerary jewelry is dominated by adult women,it is not unique to women,adult men also had the situation of funerary jewelry.
