This report relies on the content of Chapter One and Chapter Four in DRAFT for Comparative Sino-American Elder Law Textbook with characteristics of legal texts.The text is a legal work and it mainly introduces the current situation of the elderly in China as well as in the United States,covering their living condition,welfare,the risks of potential abuse,and hospitalpice.The text has also indicated gain and loss in legislation concerning the elderly in China and in the United States.Based on the experience in the process of translating the book,this report explores requirements on translation competence in the process of translating juristic work.This report aims to explore the way for translators who are not familiar with legal work textbook or certain professional fields and also analyzes whole process during translation: preparing phase of translation,translation,and proofreading in the perspective of translation competence.With the foundation of the analysis,this report gives advices as following: First,translators shall acquire more background information in preparing phase of translation;Second,translators need to review the terms in translation;Third,translators shall pond on experience of the translation.In this way,this report provides a way for legal text translation,in order to improve translator's translation competence and quality of translation version.
