Nicholas Pevsner’s pioneer of modern design, from William Morris to Gropius,as the pioneering work of design history, not only established the concept of research on design history in the public mind, but also set a model for later research on design history.Pevsner uses a linear approach in this book, highlighting the historical inevitability from William Morris to Gropius.Subsequent works on design history, such as Siegfried Gideon’s "Mechanized Dominance" and Reyner Banham’s "Design and Principles in the First Mechanical Age",have modified Pevsner’s narrative style to some extent, but the structure is almost the same.Pevsner’s pioneering research method of design history is a kind of exploration of design history writing. When this exploration becomes a fixed mode of design history writing,it will restrict the research and exploration of design history to a certain extent.Jeffrey L.Meikle commented on Forty’s "The Object of Desire" as "the first non-Pevsner-style work in the field of design history." The breakthrough of the research model of traditional design history can be seen in the book of "The Object of Desire".In the late 20th century,as other research methods and theories were cited in the study of design history, there have been many new faces in the study of design history, such as the use of the global vision of the world-wide history of Edward Lucie-Edward(Edward Lucie-Smith’s "World History of Crafts:The Role of Craftsmen in Society",Paul Clark and Julian Freeman’s Design:A Fast Reader.Jonathan Woodham is Professor of Design History at the University of Brighton,Director of Design History Research,Director of Design History Research Center, and has long been engaged in design history research in the UK.His "20th Century Design" was published in 1997."It shows that forty’s "Desire" in the 1980s "further eroded the traditional designer-led beliefs in many design history studies.Because of the era in which a designer is widely sought after by the media,so this book is criticized in design publications because its underlying proposition is:historically understanding the importance and value of an item, relying on a wide range of propositional influences and concepts, and a Complex social and cultural integration.""Design in the 20th Century" emphasizes the influence of factors outside the design ontology on design, and gets rid of the traditional art history and design history to focus on the research mode of individual or style.Since its publication, the book has enjoyed a high reputation in the field of design history. In the book,Wu Yuma’s emphasis on Forty’s "The Desire" shows that when it comes to the era of designer-led and needs a more comprehensive view of the design,Forty’s vision and method of design history research should be Re-recognized.In addition, the domestic research on Forty’s design history is still in its infancy, and the results obtained are still relatively small. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct a more in-depth study on Adrian, and "The Object of Desire" is a good breakthrough. In this paper, according to the way of thematic research,we will analyze some of the themes in The Desire. The research process will be mainly carried out by comparative analysis, aiming at exploring how Forty cut into the research of design history, and what problems he raised in the research process,as well as whether the design will change in Fortyls perspective.Forty "limited a small number of topics and themes in,The Desire "in order to explore more deeply. In this article, the author also makes a comparative analysis of some selected cases in Forty’s "The Desire, and the same cases in other design historians’ studies,in order to explore the breakthroughs in the field of vision and methodology of Forty’s research on the history of design.Through the study of "The Object of Desire",this paper explores the vision and method of Adrian Forty’s design history research, and summarizes the influence of Forty’s design social history method embodied in "The Object of Desire" on the study of design history. The participation in the design of social history methods is a breakthrough, challenge, and expectation for the writing of design history. The participation of new perspectives and new methods is bound to open up new horizons for the study of design history. In addition, this article attempts to accumulate valuable reference materials through the stUdy of design historians from a representative new historiography perspective.
