Ludwig van Beethoven(16 December 1770-26 March 1827)wrote five sonatas and three variations for cello and piano in his artistic career. His five sonatas showed various creative styles in different periods. In his works, some original techniques were used to demonstrate a balanced relationship between cello and piano.Beethoven made a very powerful influence on the development and perfection of cello sonata.According to Beethoven‘s various creative techniques used in his works, related worldwide literature and music scores, the balance between cello and piano was discussed in this paper. The equal treatment of cello and piano that Beethoven insisted on was widespread in these five sonatas mentioned above has been proved. Therefore, this study has a certain degree of innovation.Firstly,I researched and analyzed the background information of the topic—balance between cello and piano, summarized Beethoven's life and the specific set of five cello sonatas. Then the meaning of balance was explained from various perspectives, that is,the balance between cello and piano is to maintain the harmony of proportion between the two instruments through certain creative techniques from composers.Based on a large number of examples, there were three main categories of balance: 1)achieving balance in agreement,2)achieving balance in dialogue, and 3)achieving balance in comparison. To be more specific, these three main balance ways could be classified in seven subcategories. This paper explores the balance thought of Beethoven in the five sonatas, and summarizes the role of balance in music. Finally, based on the music score, through some research on the control of intonation and the expression of musical emojis,as well as the playing of long sentences, the playing of triplets, the design of bowing and the application of thumb-position,the performance of cello in the balance relationship is analyzed.Hopefully, through the research and analysis of this paper,it will provide readers with a new appreciation angle to explore Beethoven's work, and will also add valuable theoretical reference to the performer's better understanding and interpretation of his works.
