Succeeding Tcheng ki-tong,a diplomat at late Qing Dynasty at the end of the 19th century,Cheng Tcheng(Sheng Cheng)stood out among cultural celebrities in the history of Sino-French relationship in the early 20th century.He wrote his works in French and made sensation with his novel describing family life in China in the French literary world,and later,by creating literary works,translating literary classics and deepening literary studies,he devoted his time in writing,providing a tighter link between Chinese culture and French culture.In this thesis,based on his life experiences in France,we try to analyze systematically his contribution to the communication between China and France through his works about literary and artistic activities,to clearly specify Cheng Tcheng's devotion in the field of Sino-French cultural exchanges.As a result,this thesis consists of three chapters.The first chapter presents mainly the two periods of stay of Cheng Tcheng in France,it is because the shock and the communication between different cultures are the necessary conditions for the creation of works and literary activities.The second chapter is Cheng Tcheng's contribution to his literary and artistic activities in Chinese and French.It takes place in three aspects:literary works,translations and literary studies.Firstly,his literary works,especially My Mother deeply touched Paul Valery and attracted the attention of all Europe,so we try to analyze the influence on Valery through the preface of My Mother written and analyze those all over Europe through comments from Western magazines.Secondly,we take stock of the mutual translation works of which Le Cure de Campagne and The travel of Lao Ts 'an did in translation to explore its value in Sino-French communication.Thirdly,the literary studies of which the comparison of the poetry between China and France made to appreciate its significance in the integration of the Sino-French literary studies.The third chapter focuses on the conclusion and promotion of his contribution in the literary and artistic fields between China and France,the abundant thoughts embodied by his literary and artistic activities to deepen the knowledge of his contribution.By analyzing characteristics of its literary activities,we can find that the national consciousness,the comparative awareness of culture,the integration of minds and the intertwined passion for France and China are the fruits of the communication between the East and the West,and that under these ideas he carried out literary activities to contribute to Sino-French cultural communication.From analysis of literary texts to historical corpora,including personal reflections,we can conclude that Cheng Tcheng participated in the construction of Sino-French literary and artistic fields through his literary works,literary translations and literary studies.These unique ideas for exchanging cultural knowledge and contributing to Sino-French cultural communication.
