| Throughout history,spatial expression has always been the subject of study and development pursued by painters for it being one of the key components in painting.In particular,spatial expression has had major influence on traditional Chinese painters of all generations,whose works embody traditional Chinese painting’s unique concept and treatment of space.Recent decades have witnessed constant changes and progression in Chinese painters’ perception and presentation of spatial expression as products of the ever-developing era and cultural integration.Inspired by the Western perspective,a group of contemporary Chinese painters have obtained new understandings of the spatial expression of traditional Chinese figure painting,and practiced these ideas in the new meticulous painting.As a result,space is no longer presented simply as a background for the figures in contemporary Chinese meticulous figure painting.Instead,it gradually breaks away from its supplementary role and becomes one of the key elements many painters attempt to highlight.This thesis studies the properties of spatial expression of Chinese meticulous figure painting,particularly the contemporary spatial concepts’ inheritance and departure from the traditional ones,as well as the new ideas and challenges brought by the emerging new spatial treatments in Chinese meticulous figure painting.While facing different spatial concepts and expressions,we ought to respect the tradition,understand the contemporary,query the contemporary spatial concepts for their complex nature,and continue to innovate. |
