Chen Zhifo And The Study Of Pattern Teaching In Shanghai Art College

Through the record of Chen Zhifo’s early study abroad and his creation of the Shang Mei Design Pavilion,we understand the formation of Chen Zhifo’s teaching thoughts,and explore how Chen Zhifo sinicized Japanese pattern education system and integrated it into Chinese pattern education.Through the research on the historical conditions during the establishment of the Arts and Crafts Patterns Section and teaching history of the Shanghai College of Fine Arts,as well as the comparative study with the similar art colleges of pattern education,we can deeply understand the background of Shanghai College of Fine Arts’ pattern teaching education and its social status.Through the comparison between Chen Zhifo and other contemporary pattern educators,it is determined that Chen Zhifo enjoys a high position in the overall environment of pattern education in China.Through the study of pattern educators such as Chen Zhifo and the pattern teaching in Shanghai College of Fine Arts,we can clearly understand the general situation and development of pattern education in China."Priciples of Pattern ABC" is not only an important reflection of Chen Zhifo’s teaching thoughts but also an crucial part of the pattern teaching of Shanghai College of Fine Arts.Through the interpretation of "Priciples of Pattern ABC",combined with Chen Zhifo’s pattern teaching thoughts,which advocates the combination of theory and practice,the combination of art and technology,the integration of art and culture both in the east and the west,the combination of teaching and practical application,etc,we can have a deep exploration of the influence of Chen Zhifo and pattern teaching in Shanghai College of Fine Arts.Chen Zhifo’s pattern teaching thoughts,together with the teaching concept of Shanghai College of Fine Arts constitute the backbone of the pattern education during the Republic of China in the twentieth century,promoting the development of early Chinese pattern education.In summary,this paper aims to explore the contemporary significance of Chen Zhifo’s teaching thoughts and Shanghai College of Fine Arts’ teaching experience,that is,the urgent need to rebuild the system of "pattern learning" and the importance attached to the concepts of " combination of theory and practice","combination of learning and application" and "integration of China and the West" in contemporary design education and art education.
