Film noir, extending from the early 1940 s to the late 1950 s,referred to a series of movies produced by Hollywood and derivative works in Europe. The aim of film noir was to reveal the shadow of decayed society. This paper explored the spatial characteristics of film noir and analyzed the relationship between claustrophobic space and vacuous space. The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. The opening part is the introduction to our research topic, including our research background, research motivation and relevant literature review. In chapter 1,the theoretical foundation of our research topic was introduced and we clarify the concepts of claustrophobic space and vacuous space by comparing their definition of space and emotional features. The emotional features also include physical emotions and psychological emotions. In chapter 2,we emphasize the spatial overview of classical film noir.In chapter 3,using previous film noir as a research sample, the spatial sceneries are the essential pointcut for us to conduct research.Combining the plots and themes of the three examples of film noir,we demonstrate claustrophobic space and vacuous space generated in these movies in detail and explores these two diametrically opposite and interdependent spatial expressions from a philosophical perspective. In chapter 4,we illustrate the spatial structure through presentation and design thinking. In chapter 5,the paper analyzes the spatial characteristics presented in the three classic examples of film noir;In chapter 6 we extend our research into another artistic feature; In chapter 7,the theoretical foundation demonstrated in previous 6 chapters is adopted to conduct spatial translation experiments.
