With the rapid development of globalization,American sitcoms have attracted more and more viewers with their relaxing atmosphere,humorous language and funny plots,and become one of the most popular TV programs in the world.In the more than 70 years since its birth,the classic repertoire has emerged in an endless stream,and its coverage and influence have already broken through the United States.The success of American sitcoms is not accidental.It follows a certain narrative mode and inherent narrative style,which is the essence of its distinction from other types of TV series.Based on the current phenomenon that American sitcoms are popular all over the world,this paper takes some popular American sitcoms from 2007 to the present as the research object,adopts literature research method and text research method,and uses narratology and communication theory as its guiding theories.The paper researches on the current narrative style of American sitcoms from narrative context,character setting,narrative mode and other perspectives which are less involved in the past studies,so as to be helpful to the research and practice of American sitcoms in the future,and also to offer some advice for the development of Chinese sitcoms.The first chapter of this paper is the introduction.Research background,research significance,the concept & development of American sitcom,research review and research methods are mainly included in this include.The second chapter of this thesis mainly studies on the narrative context of current American sitcoms,including the narrative of "public space",the narrative of multiculturalism,the narrative of "Utopia" and the narrative of postmodernism.The third chapter of this thesis mainly studies on the character setting of the current American sitcom,including the composition of the character,the disposition of the character and the movement of the character.The fourth chapter of this thesis mainly focuses on the narrative mode of the current American sitcom,including the combination of "single episode" and "serial drama",the combination of "fixedness" and "liquidity",and the combination of "popularity" and "entertainment" as well as the use of short films and canned laughter.Due to the complexity of the American sitcom repertoire and the limited research literature that can be used for reference,the author is willing to contribute his own force to this field.I hope this paper can play a role in the related field and expect deeper and more detailed studies of the field in the future.
