Lin Yutang regards himself as a person full of contradictions.What makes him stand out from the modern Chinese literary writers are his belief in Christianity and Confucianism and writing style,which combinated Chinese and Western features.Lin Yutang has many works,such as novels,prose,compilation of dictionaries,literary research,etc.And his novels have attracted special attention.He wrote seven river novels in his life,and believe that they will go down to the posterity,which are Moment in Peking,A Leaf in the Storm,The Vermilion Gate,Chinatown,The Unexpected Island,The Red Peony and Juniper Loa.He was nominated as the Nobel Literature Prize candidate because of his works,such as Moment in Peking,which was also selected in the Top 100 Chinese novels in 20 th century,becoming a classic of modern Chinese novels.Lin Yutang's novels add a number of "round" female images with cultural symbolism to the modern Chinese literary,among which Yao Mulan,Peng Danni and Du Rouan in his trilogy,are the representatives.They not only embody Lin Yutang's culture and ideal of life,but also become the carrier of spreading Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism and an aesthetic creation to introduce and reshape the image of China to the West.Yao Mulan in Moment in Peking,as the most perfect female image in Lin Yutang's view,is the daughter of Taoism,also the daughter-in-law of Confucianism.Peng Danni in A Leaf in the Storm from pursuing material and sensual enjoyment to being influenced by Buddhist thoughts and devoting herself to the war of resistance,during the process of serving people,Peng Danni became the " Avalokitesvara" in others' view.Du Rouan in The Vermilion Gate has Oriental women's virtues of patience and gentleness and western women's independent spirit.The three female,with many symbolic meanings in modern Chinese literature,culture and sociology,are the spokesmen of Lin Yutang's story about China.This thesis takes the three heroines in Lin Yutang's trilogy as the research object,analyzing the types of the female images,the cultural intention,its techniques,its prototype,etc.The introduction of this paper describes the significance of the topic,research status and deficiencies,as well as the innovative expectations of this topic.The first part analyzes three kinds of female representatives under the influence of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism,and explains that these female images are the ideal embodiment of truth,goodness,and beauty,pursued by Lin Yutang.The second part explains the cultural intention of these female images,the intention of spreading Chinese culture,enlightening female consciousness and promoting self-independence.These female images carry the extremely important time connotation It is necessary not only to spread Chinese culture to the West,but also to introduce modern consciousness to China and promote women's self-independent idea.The third mainly analyzes the skills of portraying the female image in Lin Yutang's trilogy.The author develops the story and shapes the characters through detailed description of daily life,changing narrative perspective and plot with mixed grief and joy.The fourth part mainly describes the prototype of these female images Lin Yutang,in his novels,described and beautified several women,who influenced him in his growth,to show his gratitude,on the other hand,let them carry on the mission of propagating Chinese traditional culture to the world.The conclusion briefly summarizes the differences between Lin Yutang's female images and those described by other modern writers.It can be seen that the female images described by Lin Yutang are "transitional" and unique,and they are all "eternal women who can lead the human to step forward quickly.".
