This paper collects different forms of the kalavinka(a creature with a human face a nd bird-like body)and explores the culture implications of the harpy. The author believe s it is not a coincidence that the kalavinka appears in Buddhism and based on massive d ata and field work the process is not as simple as the change from the Greek Siren to Du nhuang Kalavink. The appearance of kalavinka represents the collision and blending of human culture.Kalavinka, known as a creature with a human face and bird-like body,is usually c alled "Musikar".Kalavinka is a mysterious bird in the mythology of ancient India and it s voice is usually used to symbolize the vice of the Buddha. It is sometimes known as th e bird of paradise,a bird with a human face and capable of producing Sanskrit sounds, which is a virtual creature that does not exist in reality. In Buddhist countries like India,Thailand,Cambodia and China, there are sculptures of kalavinka made of different kind s of materials. In Chinese Buddhism, kalavinka is the combination of the bodhisattva an d a bird, which is intended to deliver all sentient beings from torment.A lot of books,sc ulptures and works of art show that,as a mythic creature of the ancient Indian civilizatio n,kalavinka has taken its root on Chinese soil with Indian Buddhism, and influenced by Chinese traditional thought, has developed based on different characteristics from differ ent countries, regions, races and dynasties. Now what we see is kalavinka in different sh apes and materials and with different unique styles. If observed carefully,we can see different forms of Kalavinka such as embossment, circular sculpture and painting.According to incomplete statistics, there are 80 images of kalavinka in the Dunhuang Frescoes. In recent years, the building components of kala vinka sculptures have been excavated in the 3rd Tomb of the Mausoleum of the West Xi a Dynasty and the number of them is so great that it is the most representative of the cir cular sculpture of kalavinka. This article is divided into four parts and explores the symbolic meaning and expre ssion of kalavinka.Through the study of the origin of kalavinka, the paper analyzes the reasons and methods of its expression and tries to find the symbolic connotation and me dia of its expression so as to compare the expressions and images of kalavinka between different regions and to study the different expressions of kalavinka with the same attrib ute from the perspective of cultural differences. The purpose of this article is to provide a focus for study, that is to select two categories(drawing, sculpture)of kalavinka for c areful study,so as to get a deeper understanding of the Buddhist image kalavinka, whic h touched me and attracted me in the first place.
