Abstract/Summary:
In jewelry design, decorative jewelries, which lay the sole emphasis on visual effect, have been much in vogue. As a result, most designs attach much importance to the representation of visual effect. Despite the solid foundation it has laid for the symbolization of jewelry design, this phenomenon limits the development of jewelry design itself, and at the same time makes it mere an act of superficial creation. This thesis attempts to probe into the semiotic attributes of jewelry design from the perspective of semiotics. An analysis of the diversified development of jewelry design boosted by information explosion will be carried out on the basis of the origin of semiotics. The study will focus on the semiotic elements in the surface features of the symbolization of jewelry design so as to explore its semiotic properties. Through the connotative semiotic properties, namely, the identifiable, narrative, and symbolic properties as well as cultural concepts, it aims to propose the idea that semiotic elements could be reproduced, and to emphasize that semiotic elements in jewelry design should be consistent with the semiotic connotation of jewelries. An analysis of semiotic jewelries in the information era based on the above theoretical studies will then be conducted to establish a semiotic system of jewelry itself.Starting from traditional symbols, this thesis will also analyse how symbolization facilitates the reconstruction and creation of jewelry design, and how semiotic properties promote jewelries to become media of communication. Also, it will interpret how symbolization enables the modernization of jewelry design and the development of its denotative functions from multiple perspectives. Influence of semiotic thinking on jewelry design will be emphasized at the end of the thesis. The purpose of the study lies in the proposing of relevant theories of jewelry design so as to inspire more designs which are rich in Chinese implications and as the same time echo the spirit of the time.
