Abstract/Summary:
When philosophy began, ancient philosophers queried what the world was and took ontology as its research center.Since modem times, with the rise and development of capitalism, the emerging bourgeoisie has tried to resist the oppression of the feudal forces and traditional religions. The development of philosophy has also conformed to the requirements of the development of capitalism and reached the goal of liberating human nature. The perspective of research has gradually shifted from a distant place to the study of human beings, namely epistemology. The main task of epistemology is to explore people’s understanding and cognitive ability. The first thing that needs to be answered is the source and ways of people’s knowledge. The different answers to this question also create the two major schools of modern philosophy:The British empiricism and the mainland rationalism,on the basis of their common opposition to the scholastic philosophy, launched a tit-for-tat debate on the issue of understanding the sources and approaches, which also made the debate on epistemological issues the main trend of modern philosophy. As the most representative figure of British empirical theory,John Locke systematically and comprehensively discussed the origin of cognition, and systematically and profoundly criticized the "natural theory of talent" upheld by the ideological school headed by Descartes. The famous "tabula rasa" corresponding to it was put forward and the ideological system of empiricism was perfected.Locke’s epistemological ideas are concentrated in his book "The Theory of Human Understanding," which was first published in 1690.This was the first book in European history to discuss epistemological issues.Locke spent nearly two decades thinking about epistemological problem and painstakingly writing. His conciliatory academic style is particularly valuable in today’s impetuous society. This is one of the reasons why this scholar has drawn me to study his thoughts in depth. On the basis of the "Theory of Human Understanding",this article borrows other reference materials and tries to analyze the origin, content, meaning, and far-reaching influence of Locke’s tabula rasa theory and make it more clearly. At the same time,it makes us more in-depth understanding of man’s own epistemological issues, trying to get more correct knowledge in reality. The first briefly discussed in the introduction is the research question and the significance of the topic in this article, the research status of Locke tabula rasa ideology and epistemology at home and abroad, and a brief discussion of research methods and purposes. In the first chapter the author focuses on the theoretical basis of Locke’s tabula rasa. What is first explored is the origin of epistemology in the history of philosophy. It can be traced back to Aristotle’s related epistemological theory during the ancient Greek philosophy period.First,he put forward the "paradox" and began to value the role of experience in the process of understanding.Until the modern period of philosophy,Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes inherited Aristotle’s empirical theory, and empiricism began to enter the arena of the history of philosophy. However, due to the constraints of conditions, their empiricism was at an early age.Locke showed the basic idea of "concept originated from experience" and conducted a complete demonstration, establishing the ideological system of empiricism.Next,in the second chapter, the author conducts a detailed analysis of Locke’s tabula rasa theory and epistemology, clarifying the background and historical reasons of Locke’s epistemological thought. His philosophical thought has not only been influenced by his professional studies, but also the rise of the natural sciences brought him new opportunities for thinking. These elements have profoundly influenced Locke’s writing on "The Theory of Human Understanding." This chapter also discusses the content, purpose, and significance of the tabula rasa, and discusses the issues related to empiricism, such as the nature and scope of ideas and knowledge. At that time, the ideological world in Europe prevailed in Descartes’ "theory of innate ideas",and Locke recognized its dangers. Therefore, before establishing the system of empiricism, his major task was to clear the obstacles on the road-criticize Descartes’ theory of innate ideas, then put forward the tabula rasa theory in a targeted manner and stressed that the senses and reflections play a role in the formation of ideas. The theorist Leibniz attacked the defects in Locke’s thought and maintained the position of rationalism. The two sides began a wonderful ideological debate. The third chapter of this article follows the debate and discusses the ideas. In the last chapter, the author reviews Locke’s tabula rasa theory and empiricism as a whole which leads me to reflect and recognize its positive significance and deficiencies, and its role of the direction of philosophical development after this.In addition,it has an important influence on the development of pedagogy and psychology.Locke’s tabula rasa theory has more meaning in his ideology and needs to continue to explore it.
