Maxu Weibangis a important director in the history of Chinese films.He created and developed Chinese horror films.When Japan occupied Shanghai,Maxu Weibang stayed in Shanghai and made several films.He is very valuable for Chinese film history but there has few records and studies about him.This paper mainly analyzes historical materials and film texts.Returning the director to history,collating and analyzing the director and films.Explore the artistic value of these two filmsSong at Midnight and The Story of Qiuhaitang.The introduction section collects relevant books and materials form 1912 to 21 century about Maxu Weibang.Through social reports at that time to show the influence of the director.o find out the reasons for the missing in the film history.The first chapter talk begin with origin zbout germ of horror movie in China.And recording Maxu Weibang’s journey from school to film.The second chapter is about the filmSong at Midnight which made in 1937.Focusing on character modeling,setting,lens,how to use shadow,and the influence of German expressionism.Then contrast the multiple adaptations of this film.The third chapter selected the moive The Story of Qiuhaitang.This artisticmovie begins with a stunning 71-second long shot.And Maxu Weibang use this story express the similar to the majority of Chinese people,who left their hometown because of the war and lived a hard life.In addition,except for the symbolism name of Qiuhaitang,the other scene bouquet has a morbid symbolic meaning in the film.It also plays a unique role in promoting emotional progress and creating atmosphere.Through the use of narrative techniques and audio-visual elements,Maxu Weibang shows his familiarity with horror films and his pursuit of art.His movies are excellent and contains director’s concern about life.
