Maugham is an important writer in the history of English literature. His works are characterized by plot ups and downs, pungent humor and clever structure. He has been loved by readers since the 19 th century. In his literary world,he has never stopped thinking about death. The various death writing contains a heavy and complex consciousness of death, which has both perceptive humanistic concern and profound aesthetic implication.According to the writer's personal experience and the concrete content of the text, this paper chooses Maugham's classic novel as the research object to analyze the death consciousness in his novel. The introduction mainly introduces the content of Maugham's creation and death consciousness, the significance and value of the topic and the research status of this topic at home and abroad. The first chapter traces the causes of death consciousness. From the special social background,multi-cultural trend and unique personal experience of the 19 th century. The turbulent background of the era has awakened people to look at life and death, and various literary styles influenced Maomu's attitude towards death.Personal development experiences expose him to the individual who dies, while medical experiences and battlefield rescue work allow him to view death from a more rational and open perspective. The second chapter summarizes Maugham's writing of death.By means of textual perusal, taking several long and classical short stories as examples, death is divided into three categories: first, death for the ideal world,Maomu is good at shaping the ideal suitor, they are usually occupied by passion, when the ideal environment, the body also died. The second is to indulge in the mire of sexual desire in death, unchecked desire to devour life. The third is the most widespread and realistic death from poverty, where people are unable to meet their basic food and clothing needs because they have no money and are left to die.The third chapter analyzes the form of Maugham's death consciousness in the text.As a writer, his parents died in childhood, and his study and work in adulthood led him to see more deaths. The edification of his literary philosophy made Maugham write death in an objective and dispassionate tone, avoiding personal feelings. He paid attention to the plot twists and turns of the novel, often using the "sudden turn" method to control the fate of characters. In the form of sudden reversal, the characters die, emphasizing the irresistible nature of death, but the plot reversal has no stiff feeling, but implicitly and deeply beat the ugly humanity behind death. The fourth chapter discusses the significance of death consciousness in novels.Maugham follows the mission of the realist writer and criticizes the politics, religion and marriage of capitalism.Taking death consciousness as the starting point,he dug deep into human nature and denounced the psychological behavior of being indifferent and selfish. To the death,in the death of the view, expressed calm and still not lost struggling life attitude. The conclusion summarizes the whole text.
