The researching object of the article is The Ninth-Day Literary Gathering at Xing'an stored in the Cleveland Museum of Art,which displays a literary gathering of the Han-chiang Poetry Society,a literary group in the Yangchow area of Qing dynasty.The article aims to have an insight into the cultural environment then based on the settlement and analysis for the painting and the events and people relevant to it.Besides,the article mainly focuses on the interaction between different regional cultures,the intension between the authority and the liberty and the position of merchants in society,especially their relationships with the literati.First,the article introduces the fundamental condition of Han-chiang Poetry Society and clears up the members' constitution and the activities' form according to general features of regional literary groups,and furthermore,points out the group's particularity.Then,the article concentrates on the aspects of painting.The Ma brothers,patrons and hosts of the group,are taken as the case.The article attempts to trim the connoisseurship activities and collections of them to understand their knowledge about painting and considers there is contention of regional cultural traditions between Hui and Zhe in the collections of the Ma brothers.Last,the article analyzes the painting The Ninth-Day Literary Gathering at Xing'an and the literary gathering itself from three sides.First,it tries to find out the order of the members in the painting and the merchant patron's will through the image analysis and text classification.Second,it analyzes the source of the image pattern from the aspects of creation and explains the motif of the painting based on the social and political background.Third,it reads and summarizes the self-shaping behavior on the stand of merchants and explores the situations of merchants and their relationships with the literati in the late period of feudal society according to the literati's evaluation.
