Background:Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive and often debilitating condition and the current treatments are divided into two main categories:nonsurgical and surgical treatments.Secondary lymphedema is often caused by surgical cancer treatments and trauma.Conservative, nonsurgical management of lymphedema is often the first line of treatment, and it is usually utilized for early stages because it cannot address the changes that arise in the setting of severe,end-stage lymphedema categorized by chronic fibrosis and life-threatening disability. These patients require a reductive intervention, which is when surgical treatments play a role. This research analyzes patients diagnosed with diseased lymphatic system from Peking Union Medical College Hospital(PUMCH)and incorporates a case report which demonstrates the utilization of a surgical technique in treating Stage ? lymphedema. Methods:We prospectively assessed 409 in-patients(May 1984 to November 2018)and out-patients(February 2015 to July 2017)cases diagnosed with diseased lymphatic system especially with lymophedema as primary diagnosis from PUMCH.Results:84.85%of the patients are female,96.33%were diagnosed as secondary lymphedema.75.48%of in-patients were hospitalized at least 3 times;67 of the 104 patients(62.62%)who received surgical repair received combined surgical techniques at once,79 of the 104 patients(75.86%)were lower limb lymphedema. Conclusion:This clinical study confirms that PUMCH adopted combined surgical techniques to treat secondary lower extremity lymphedema.
