| Objective:Objective:To observe the clinical effects of Huanxiao Liuan Decoction on the remission stage of pediatric bronchial asthma and its effects on small airway functionMethods:44 children diagnosed with bronchial asthma in remission stage were selected from the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine's Affiliated Dongfang Hospital from October 2017 to February 2019.They were then randomly divided into treatment group and control group,with 22 cases in each group.The treatment group was orally administered with Huanxiao Liuan Decoction granules,while the control group was administered with inhaled Fluticasone Propionated Aerosol.The changes in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)syndrome,asthma control levels and small airway function changes were compared between both groups before and after their respective treatments.Results:1.TCM syndrome:Before treatment,there were no significant differences in the total score and severity of TCM syndromes between both groups(P>0.05),which was comparable.At the end of the treatment,with respect to evaluation of TCM syndromes,there were 0 cases of complete recovery,20 cases with markedly effective results,2 cases that were proven effective and 0 cases proven ineffective in the treatment group.There were 0 cases of complete recovery,13 cases with markedly effective results,9 cases that were proven effective and 0 cases that were proven ineffective in the control group.There were no statistical differences between both groups(P>0.05).The overall curative effect of TCM syndromes in the treatment group was better than that in the control group.From the perspective of specific syndromes,there were no significant differences in terms of the scores and severity scores of the main symptoms(wheezing,coughing,expectoration,chest tightness)and the secondary symptoms(mental state,appetite,stools,facial complexion)between both groups.When compared to the baseline,the symptoms of wheezing,coughing,expectoration,chest tightness and appetite of the both groups improved within the first,second and third months month of treatment,which has statistical significance(P<0.05).The symptoms of mental state and facial complexion of the treatment group improved within the first month of treatment(P<0.05),the symptoms of stools of the treatment group improved within the second month of treatment(P<0.05).The symptoms including mental state,stools and facial complexion of the control group also improved,When compared with the baseline,there were no significant differences in the aforementioned symptoms during the first,second and third months of treatment(P>0.05).During the course of treatment,when comparing the specific syndromes of both groups,the results showed that:During the first month of treatment,the symptoms of mental state and appetite of the treatment group improved significantly compared to the control group(P<0.05).During the second month of treatment,the symptoms of wheezing,breathlessness,coughing,mental state,appetite and facial complexion of the treatment group improved significantly compared to the control group(P<0.05).During the third month of treatment,the symptoms of mental state,appetite and facial complexion of the treatment group improved significantly compared to the control group(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in terms of the symptoms of expectoration,chest tightness and stools between both groups during the first,second and third months of treatment(P>0.05).2.Asthma control levels:There was no statistical difference between both groups in terms of asthma control levels(P>0.05),which was comparable.The asthma control levels during the first three months of treatment between both groups were comparedThe results suggest increases in asthma control levels for both groups(P<0.05),but higher control levels were reported in the treatment group compared to the control group(P<0.05).There were fluctuations in asthma control levels observed in the control group between the second and third months of treatment.3.Pulmonary ventilation function:Before treatment,there were no statistical differences in terms of large airway indices,small airway indices and the degree of decline in small airway function for both groups(P>0.05),which was comparable.In the third month of treatment,there was an increase in MMEF,MEF50 and NMEF25 values after treatment in both groups.However,the increase in MMEF and MEF25 values for the treatment group was statistically significant(P<0.05).On the other hand,the increases in MEF50 values for the treatment group and MMEF,MEF50 and MEF25 values in the control group were not statistically significant(P>0.05).When comparing both groups'small airway function grading with their baseline,there was significant improvement after treatment for the treatment group(P<0.05),but there was no significant improvement after treatment for the control group(P>0.05).There were still no significant statistical differences in terms of small airway function for both groups(P>0.05).Conclusion:With regards to the overall evaluation of treatment efficacy,the treatment group is superior compared to the control group,particularly in terms of changes in wheezing,coughing,mental state,appetite,facial complexion and other symptoms.With regards to asthma control levels,there were higher control levels in the treatment group,with fewer recurrences reported.In terms of small airway function,the increases in MMEF and MEF25 in the treatment group were more significant that that of pre-treatment.Therefore,we can conduct further studies on the effects of Huanxiao Liuan Decoction in improving small airway function in the remission stage of pediatric asthma.Huanxiao Liuan Decoction has been proven effective in alleviating asthma symptoms and improving asthma control levels.Huanxiao Liuan Decoction could be an effective TCM herbal treatment option for asthmatic children in their remission stage,which can enhance the treatment efficacy of bronchiall asthma in its remission stage,as well as raise asthma control levels. |
