October 2013,Chinese President Xi Jinping first proposed the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road"("One Road" for short)strategy.Up to now,37 countries along the route have signed relevant cooperation agreements with China.China and most of the countries along the "One Road" are emerging or developing countries, the manufacturing industry of these countries is in a stage of rapid development, and it occupies an increasingly important position in the development of the national economy. Therefore,it is of positive practical significance to study manufacturing industry in China and "One Road" countries.Second,China and the countries along the "One Road" manufacturing industry are mostly at the low end of the value chain.Although some countries are undergoing industrial transformation and want to break the "low-end lock-in" status of their manufacturing industries in the global value chain, they have frequently been hindered by developed countries in the process of industrial transformation.Especially after the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008,the introduction of the "reindustrialization" policy by developed countries has increased this obstacle. The proposal of the "One Road" has become a major turning point for manufacturing development and transformation of China and the countries along the "One Road".Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the manufacturing export competitiveness of China and the countries along the "One Road".In addition,China and countries along the "One Road" are mostly processing trade countries, using traditional trade statistics methods can no longer truly reflect the real trade volume of a country. This paper uses Trade in Value Added data to study the competitiveness of manufacturing exports to make their results more authentic.First of all, this paper sorts out the related researches on Trade in Value Added and export competitiveness, and makes a summary review on this basis, which lays a foundation for subsequent research. At present, most scholars analyze and study the countries along the "One Road" from the perspectives of trade products, industrial products, petroleum industry, and producer services and the analyses are based on total value statistics. In contrast, this paper uses the Trade in Value Added trade data to study the manufacturing export competitiveness of countries along the route.Secondly, this paper uses the Trade in Value Added data from the OECD-TiVA database to obtain sample data for 1995-2011.First of all, this paper analyses the manufacturing industry facts of China and countries along the "One Road" from the scale of exports, the growth rate of exports, the world status of exports from all countries, and the export structure have a macro-level understanding of the manufacturing industry in each country; Then, using the trade competitiveness index and the indicator of comparative advantage as an evaluation index of export competitiveness, this article compares and analyzes the export competitiveness of China and the countries along the "One Road" about manufacturing industry as well as the subdivided industries. It is found that the export competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry is higher than most of the countries along the "One Road".However,at the sub-industry level, there is no strong export competition between China and most of the countries along the "One Road",indicating that China and countries along the "One Road" have a certain degree of complementarity in manufacturing. What's more, combining Porter's "diamond model",this article carries on an empirical test which is based on variable coefficient regression model from the four aspects of production factors(labor productivity and technology level),demand conditions(GDP),related and supporting industries(productive services),and corporate strategies(foreign direct investment)analyze the impact of various influencing factors on the export competitiveness of manufacturing industries in China and countries along the "One Road".And on this basis, this paper perform robustness tests through replacing the explanatory variables and removing special sample sizes. Finally, this paper summarizes the results of comparative research and empirical analysis. On this basis,it put forward policy suggestions on the manufacturing industries development of China from the complement of advantageous industries, industrial transformation and upgrading, and the formulation of a reasonable trade policy. |
