A Study On Early Stage Shen Bao's Idea Of Running A Newspaper—Based On The Text Study Of Shen Bao From 1872 To 1912

As a typical example of the modernization of Chinese newspaper industry,Shen Bao was one of the most influential Chinese newspapers in Shanghai by the 1880 s,which was related to the relatively modern news concept of the newspapermen in Shen Bao and its operation according to the law of news.However,when it comes to the origin of modern newspaper thought,the academic circles often tend to focus on Lin zexu,Wei yuan and Wang tao,etc.,and their research also focuses on the bourgeois news thought and the practice of running a newspaper,but neglecting the newspapermen in Shen Bao and their ideas of running a newspaper.This paper holds the view that the early ideas of news(paper)in Shen Bao are far more extensive than those of Lin zexu and Wei yuan,and more comprehensive than those of Wang tao.Through the efforts of several generations of newspapermen,Shen Bao continuously carried out its own reform and accumulated rich experience in the practice of running a newspaper,which finally laid the development direction of modern newspaper industry and set a model for the development of various newspapers in China in the future.Therefore,this paper selects the early Shen Bao from 1872 to 1912 as the research text,analyzes the articles published by Shen Bao about news thoughts and running newspapers,and finds that the early Shen Bao has its own unique views on using people,newspaper mission,news business and business strategy.In terms of selection and employment,Shen Bao requires the main writer to have both political integrity and talent,be prudent and knowledgeable and be proficient in news business.The requirements for the visitors are that they have widen knowledge and experience,knowledgeable about world affairs,and upright in character.When interviewing the news,they should be able to “inquire into the matter in its original form,and spout their remarks in a leisurely and lengthy manner,so as to keep them fresh”and“everything is accurate and the words are detailed”,which are the standards and principles for selecting editors and journalists of the early Shen Bao.Although it is a commercial newspaper founded by foreign businessmen,Shen Bao actively shoulders the mission of spreading new ideas,guiding public opinion and promoting social reform,continuously practices the principle of “giving consideration to both justice and interests”,and gives full play to the important function of the newspaper as a“mouthpiece”,promoting social justice and maintains social stability in the end.At the level of newspaper operation,Shen Bao attaches great importance to the news business,and adopts the principle of “having access to information”and seeking novelty.For the important revenue source of the newspaper ——advertising business,Shen Bao took the initiative to recruit advertising,improving the form,and achieved outstanding results.As soon as the "Sinicized" idea of running a newspaper was formed,it had a great influence on the Chinese newspaper industry at that time.Many modern Chinese bourgeois newspapers and periodicals were founded with reference to some forms of the early Shen Bao.On the one hand,this kind of influence is accompanied by its own newspaper running practice,and on the other hand,it is because the newspaper theory principle proposed by it has become the practice guide of Chinese newspaper readers.It has to be admitted that in the early days,the concept of running a newspaper was indeed carried forward by the practice of the successors,which had a profound impact on the journalism since modern China.
