Inheritance And Breaking: The Establishment And Disappearance Of Shanghai "News Daily" In The Early Days Of The Founding Of The People 's Republic Of China (1949-1960)

"Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao" was founded in June29,1949as a reform of "Xin-Wen-Bao", which was a famous business newspaper before CPC’s governance of Shanghai. In the early period of its history,"Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao" focused on reporting business news and targeted readers from industrial and commercial sectors. In the following11years, along with the variation of the China’s social situation and the CPC’s journalistic policies,"Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao" experienced several significant reforms:from a business newspaper to a professional newspaper that served the socialization of private business, and then took the responsibility of reporting CPC’s economic policies until the cease of its publication.The development of "Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao" is recognized as a typical case of the private newspapers’ transition from independent presses into a part of CPC’s journalistic system in the first decade of People’s Republic of China. During this period, the interaction among the political power, journalistic environment and "Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao" never stopped. Based on this perspective, this paper will examine Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao’s activities under the change of China’s journalistic environment and CPC’s press policy.The main body of this paper is composed of four parts:Firstly, the background and preparation of Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao’s start-up and its column settings, content features, editorial system will be discussed; Secondly, the many contradictions between Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao and CPC’s press policies will be explored; Thirdly, Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao’s reforming path and measures will be presented and divided into three levels (practical level, ideological level and organizational level), this paper will also point out that the reform of Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao can be concluded into two phases; Finally, the reasons for the cease of Xin-Wen-Ri-Bao’s publication will be discovered.
