The integrated design of radar system and communication system is one of the inevitable trends of future scientific and technological development. The integrated radar communication system can provide possible solution to the insufficient spectrum resource difficulty, improve the combat capability of military equipments, and ameliorate the living condition of the society. It has great potential in both research and application.Multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)technology was initially invented for communications, and then adopted to radar applications.Due to the spatial diversity of the MIMO communication system, the impact of multipath fading on communication stability can be greatly reduced.Through spatial multiplexing, one can form multiple independent parallel channels in space, and hence enable the transmission of multiple data streams to improve the system capacity.MIMO radar system, whose transmitters emit correlated or orthogonal waveforms, enjoys the waveform diversity. The application of MIMO technology to the integrated design of radar communication system can not only make use of the advantages of MIMO,but also promote the innovation and development of the integrated system. In this paper,a new coexistence MIMO radar communication system is proposed, which allows the cooperation of the radar and communication sides. The rest of the paper is organized as follows.(1)Communication performance of the cooperative MIMO radar communication system is analyzied. The received signal model of the MIMO communication part is developed, the data rate is considered, the mutual information and the outage probability are calculated. The associated spatial diversity gain and spatial multiplexing gain are computed and used as performance metric for the communication task. The trade-off between the communication diversity and multiplexing gain is studied.(2)Radar target detection performance of the cooperative MIMO radar communication system is investigated. The received signal model of the MIMO radar part is introduced, and the optimal detector under the Neyman Pearson criterion is derived. We derived the closed-form probability of miss, and discussed the relationship between the decision threshold and the signal-to-noise ratio.Further, the diversity gain of the radar system is defined to characterize the target detection performance.(3)Radar resolution in the cooperative MIMO radar communication system is studied. We calculated the the likelihood ratio and ambiguity function.Considering the similarities between the MIMO radar and the MIMO communication systems,a radar multiplexing gain is defined. Then the radar resolution is discussed using the multiplexing gain as the system resolution indicator. It is shown that via proper collaboration between the MIMO radar and MIMO communication systems, for example by sharing important information such as radar signals, radar and communication antenna positions etc,it is possible to increase the data rate and decrease the outage probablility of the communication part, and to improve the detection and resolution of the radar part. The findings of this work can provide guidance for the design and development of the coexistence radar communication system.
