Collation And Research On Mansions And Gardens Of Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers

There are five existing Suzhou local chronicles under the name Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers,of which the Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers edited by Feng Guifen is the last one.Compared with other four local chronicles,it has a more comprehensive content and complete stylistic rules and layout,and it has a high value as historical data.As one of the representatives of Suzhou culture,gardens have a long history.The Mansions and Gardens part in the Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers has a complete records of mansions and gardens of Suzhou in different dynasties,which is of high value for the studies about gardens in Suzhou.The original version has vertical typesetting and is written in complex form Chinese without punctuation,which make it difficult for modern people to read.Thus,this paper collates punctuation and completes proofreading in order to make it easier for the public to understand this historical material as well as the history of Suzhou gardens.This paper takes the Mansions and Gardens part in the Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers as research object and uses the methods of literature analysis,comparative analysis and a combination of macro and micro research.First of all,this paper makes punctuation collation to have a general understanding of the original text.Secondly,the research status of Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers and the concept and origin of it are reviewed.This paper also introduces the life experiences of Feng Guifen,the chief editor of Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers,and Xu Dunren,the editor of Mansions and Gardens part,as well as the historical background of Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers and the source of historical data.On this basis,by consulting and comparing a large number of ancient documents,this paper finds out the existing problems in the gazetteers and summarizes and corrects them.Then this paper analyzes the characteristics of its style and content and summarize its advantages and disadvantages by comparing it with other local chronicles of Suzhou and modern annals.Finally,on the basis of previous work,this paper further explores the multiple values of the Mansions and Gardens part of the Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers in the correction of garden history,literati poetry records and its impact on the chronicles compilation of thefollowing dynasties.
