With the advancement and development of the times,Internet technology is changing with each passing day, smartphones are becoming more and more popular, and the application of instant messaging software is becoming more and more widespread. With its simple operation interface, convenient voice function, acquaintance network and private socialization,WeChat has gained a large number of stable user groups.According to the traditional concept, the elderly group is a digitally vulnerable group marginalized by the new media wave, influenced by factors such as their own health status, education level and economic conditions. However, with the changes of society, the lifestyle of some elderly people has also changed.More and more elderly people have stepped into the Internet world and tried to connect their own social networks through the Internet. From the former ‘digital refugees' to the growing number of ‘silver hair low-headed people',the use of WeChat enriches the old age of the elderly. The purpose of this study is to explore the problem of the use of WeChat in the identification of the identity of the elderly,to draw on the analytical framework of sociology, and to combine the actual living conditions of the elderly,to divide the identity of the elderly into self-identity that reflects individuality and family identity and social identity that reflect groupment.Specifically,in the process of using WeChat, the elderly have a new understanding of self-identity,how the family identity of the elderly has changed, and how WeChat has reshaped the social identity of the elderly. This study mainly uses the method of qualitative research, with the elderly WeChat users aged 60 and above as the research object, through the incomplete participation in observation and in-depth interviews.Firstly, the WeChat use of the elderly group was observed in a participatory manner. On the basis of observation, according to the principle of ‘target sampling',30 elderly WeChat users aged 60 and above were selected for in-depth interviews. The full text can be divided into four parts: The first part is the introduction, which mainly introduces the research origin, research purpose, research value, the framework of the paper and the related literature. The second part is the first chapter, namely research design.Based on the combing of the concept and theory of identity, the research questions are put forward, and the research methods, the selection of research objects and the specific operation process are elaborated. The third part is the second, third and fourth chapters. It is the main part of the thesis. It specifically studies the use of WeChat and the identity of the elderly, the change of family identity and the reshaping of social identity.Through the use of WeChat, the elderly have achieved self-expression,self-construction and self-energy,and the self-identity of the elderly has improved.WeChat constructs a virtual family situation of “absent presence”,and the sense of presence and family sensation of the elderly is enhanced. In the new media environment, the phenomenon of digital feedback at the family level is particularly prominent. The transfer role between the elderly and young people has been replaced, and the family authority of the elderly has been eliminated. The widespread use of WeChat has enabled the elderly to rediscover the way they participate in society and has established a diversified network discourse system that reshapes the social identity of older people. The fourth part is the conclusion part.It summarizes the main contents and research findings of this research. At the same time,it also reflects on the inadequacies of the research. It proposes that we should further consider how to help the elderly group to better integrate into the Internet era.
