With the usage of mobile devices getting more and more popular in our daily life, there are also more and more needs from customers other than the simple end-to-end communication for mobile internet.Nowadays, customers also expect to use wireless networks to deliver or share multimedia contents with other people.Under these circumstances,IP networks, which are designed for end-to-end communication, are now facing a new challenge. There are two big problems in the current IP networking architecture. One problem is that communication based on TCP/IP protocols is bound to IP addresses, which leads to a lot of repeating transmission in the networks. Therefore,a lot of network resources have been wasted on delivering the same packets.Another problem in the current IP network architecture is that the TCP/IP protocol controls the quality of the connection by sending signal messages between the two nodes, which is a good solution for wired networking, but causes a few problems in wireless networks.Due to the instability of the links in wireless networks,re-authentication and re-connection can happen frequently when devices move around. Also it will lead to a long non-response time in the transmission and the quality of the service can hardly be kept.Named Data Networking was proposed as an alternative to the IP network architecture in wireless communication in this condition.Named Data Networking(NDN)is communication protocol to transform the IP address based communication to content centric communication. After doing several simulations in NS-3 for current popular wireless NDN forwarding schemes,we found out that there are still several drawbacks.E.g.,flooding of interest packets in wireless networks and the usage of local data packets are still not taken good care of.Therefore,in this thesis,we propose a forwarding scheme called NDN-PS,which is based on content popularity and content similarity to improve the algorithms for wireless NDN.In order to solve the problem of interest flooding in wireless networks,we propose to add the influence of content popularity and the number of neighbors into the forwarding decision.Meanwhile,we take the advantage of node overhearing in wireless networks to avoid sending packets repeatedly. On the other side,NDN-PS makes use of other similar contents with the target contents, which are stored in the neighbor nodes.Under certain circumstances, the similar contents can also be returned to the customer, and the customer can give feedback to the received similar content to help modify the parameter for similarity of the two contents.Through simulations,we found out that in general, there will be less delay and redundant transmission in networks at the sacrifice of some interest re-transmissions.Furthermore,a prototype based on the wireless forwarding plane is developed to evaluate the proposed scheme in real life. The developed prototype system takes advantage from the NDN protocol to realize the communication in a group with multi-hops.From the results,we can see that by using NDN,the number of forwarded packets is decreased and the delay during the transmission is also shortened. This thesis proposed an optimal forwarding plane in wireless NDN,which is valuable not only in science but also in engineering.
