Coincident with the increase of the population of the aged people, the products for aged users have been growing in market share.Due to the rapid development of scientific technology, the influences by electronic products on people's life has been increasingly more important.Amid these influences, those by smart phones are the most obvious. Thus the interface design of the smart phones for the aged users has become the point of the study on human–computer interaction. The interface design is very important for full touch screen smart phones for aged users. In the design of interface of available smart phones for aged users, there are many defects including variety of the size of the icons in the interface, the irrationality of the size and the layout of the interface, and the lack of a complete and integrated design standard. Therefore,it is very necessary to improve the usability and user experience of the smart phones by optimizing the interfaces. In the light of the theories on the usability, interaction design and user experience, this study researches the users of this sort of smart phones, conducts product analysis on the basis of market analysis of available smart phones for the aged users with the study of references, and evaluates the usability by using eye tracking technology and traditional performance measurement with the variables including the sizes of icons(48×48px,72×72px,or 96×96px),Dock on the interface(interface with a Dock or interface without a Dock),the sizes of the interface(5.8 inches、4.7 inches、4.0 inches),the layout of main interfaces(a 3×3 grid layout or hybrid layout),Task completion time, eye movement data, numbers of errors and users' subjective were measured in the evaluation.According to the passage, the following can be found.96×96px icons get the most affection of the aged users.Errors and task completion time are less in interfaces with Docks than those in interfaces without Dock. The size of the interface has significant effects on both users' fixation duration and the saccade counts, the layout of main interface only has significant effect on fixation points, and the size of the interface and layout of the main interface have interaction with fixation duration.Hot maps and scanning paths illustrates what the users focus on are the lower part and the middle part of the interface;in the lower part is the Dock and in the middle part is time module in the hybrid layout for users to operate. Thus frequently used icons and important modules on display should be placed in these parts. In the accordance with the analysis and conclusion, proposals for the design of the smart phones for aged users are held as follows.(1)96×96px icons have high usability;a Dock should be placed in the bottom of the interface, the suitable size of the interface should be 4.7 inches and the hybrid layout should be employed in the main interface of the smart phones for aged users.(2)The design of layout should accommodate different designs of layout of the interface.(3)Each design element should be in harmony, thus making the whole interface simple, beautiful and elegant.(4)Graphical operation icons and display modules are very attractive and readily comprehensible to the users.(5)Interface with blue as the background colors and white as font color fit aged users.Based on the eye tracking technology, this study on the design elements of human–computer interaction interface, not only proved that user-centered design theories' leading roles in the design of smart phones for aged people, but also provided a reference for the design of interface of smart phones and even electronic products for aged people.
