With the rapid growth of global electronic commerce and personal data, much internet companies need more and more storage server to support the current cloud computing, cloud storage. And for storage server, cooling solution determines the storage density. The study details the thermal design process of a high density storage server, which includes 24 hard drives,2 computing units,as well as 2 redundant power supplies.System cooling design use Flotherm software to build thermal model for simulation, including optimization of the heat sink thermal resistance. After proto type samples build, the experiment of using wind tunnel to check heat sink thermal resistance, which also study the impact from chipset power consumption, airflow, and heat sink heat pipe locations. The experimental definition of the system fan control strategy,so that the cooling power is reduced to a reasonable range.Computational and experimental results shows that existing forced air cooling condition can meet 2RU of 12 3.5 "drives or 24 2.5" drives cooling requirement, and for CPU heat sink with heat pipes can have lower thermal resistance. The experiment also found that for a low power chipset cooling, there is less advantage of the heat sink with heat pipe. And because of the heat pipe has lower thermal mass, chipset temperature rise sometimes is higher than those with traditional aluminum heat sinks.
