The temporal and special distribution of occupants has a great influence on the indoor environment quality,space utilization efficiency and energy consumption of the building.As a public place where people exercise,the gym is required strictly for its indoor environment.However,occupants indoor is also the source of heat gains,and their large amount of exhaust gas is also one of the pollutant sources for the indoor air quality.Therefore,it is prone to waste energy from Building Equipment System to ensure the indoor environment.This study is devoted to explore the pattern of occupancy in the gym and analyse its impact on the indoor environment and energy consumption of the building.A one-month experiment was conducted at the gym of University of Reading in UK,and Wi-Fi based indoor positioning system was used to acquire occupation information of gym.The occupants' distribution in the gym was analysed from both spatial and temporal aspects and means of machine learning specifically was used to explore the characteristic of occupants' duration.Based on the existing indoor environment and explored occupancy patterns,the analysing result showed that the gym owns the great potential of energy-saving.Therefore,this study devotes to explore two strategies according to the indoor occupancy to reduce the total energy consumption of the HVAC system in the gym.Moreover,the simulation method verified that the use of the occupancy-based operational strategy can help reduce energy consumption in the HVAC system obviously.In order to verify the applicability of Wi-Fi based indoor positioning system using in the gym,the actual accuracy of the technology was obtained through multiple tests.Also,the potential factor that may affect the accuracy of the technology was analysed at the end of the dissertation,which can provide reference for improving the positioning accuracy in such public buildings in the future.
