A Qualitative Analysis On Ge Gongzhen's Modern Press Concept

A group of intellectuals inspired and awoke people in different ways during the May 4th movement.Liang Qichao's idea of cultivating “Xinmin” was the first enlightening thought based on the modernization of man in Chinese modern history.And Ge Gongzhen emphasized the role of the press as a starting point to enlighten the public,believing that people had become more judgmental because of reading news.The popularity of the press had resulted in the stream of freedom,love,and equality,which led to the initial awareness of freedom,love,equality among the public.From then on,these intellectuals began to cultivate the “new people” of “a sound personality”,focusing on the realization of modernization and promoting the transformation from “traditional” to “modern”.These concepts did not only highlight the significance of inspiring people,but also provide reference for contemporary journalism education.The concept of modern journalism is different from the traditional values.Therefore,in this paper,the author uses the research methods of history of ideas and reorganize Ge Gongzhen's journalism history writings and comment words to analyze what is behind Ge Gongzhen's core belief.The research is on the basis of Ge Gongzheng's critical comments,more specifically,on the selection from the“History of China's School Study”as key analysis.A treatise is the carrier of ideas,and Ge Gongzhen's modern journalism ideas are largely based on his fundamental views on the nature of the press,the news standard,the development and operation of the newspaper industry.To some extent,it can be broadly summarized as the publicity,the news-based awareness of newspapers,the evolving concept of journalism,and the commoditized understanding of press business.These points profoundly show the connotation of Ge Gongzhen's modern journalism.The first part of the paper gives an overall description of the formation of Ge Gongzhen's modern journalism.The second part interprets the main content of his ideas and illustrate his personal practice.The third part makes a peer comparison between Ge Gongzhen and other intellectuals,and explains his limitations.The study finds that the most prominent feature ofGe Gongzhen's modern journalism is its enlightenment.This trait is not limited to text content and has an impact on modern China's press through practice.The connotation of modern journalism conveys “new knowledge” and is“new knowledge” itself,which has important historical significance.It provides spiritual orientation for Chinese national awakening and a reliable basis for the construction of modern journalism,and more importantly,it also promotes the dominant status of journalists.
