Recently, critical theory in political economics of communication gradually becomes an important academic trend of communication science, cultural study and Marxism theory study. The reason why the trend draws the academic circle's attention is that media political economy critical theory pays great attention to analyzing the political and economic power behind the culture production and transmission,as well as to bringing new horizon and route to the current study of media culture.Mike Wayne is an active scholar in the current domain of political economics of communication. My thesis takes the political economics of communication of British scholar Mike Wayne as the study subject. It sets out from the standpoint of Marxism and the development of the newest studies of foreign Marxism,in order to tease out the thoughts and history of Mike Wayne.Mike Wayne is employed in Brunel University in London and is a professor in Film and Television. His research field includes Marxism cultural theory, cultural and political economics and British popular films, etc. He has written lots of articles about film and television in the light of Marxism cultural theory. My thesis teases out the critical thoughts of Mike Wayne's political economics of communication. The first part is "Mike Wayne and political economics of communication" and it mainly introduces the historical background and theoretical origin of political economics of communication,as well as the life and some works of Wayne. The second part is "the concept of mode of production in political economics of communication",discussing about the problem of new media technology and capitalist production relations, and also the problem of capital accumulation in new media industry.I also summarize the impact of new media on commodity production in information society, including the connection between knowledge and commodity production, and I study the problems of modern capitalist society from the perspective of production relations. The third part is "the concepts of class and.class struggle in political economics of communication".This part mainly focuses on the concepts of class, class struggle and socialization of production and it studies the relations between middle class and knowledge workers mainly from the jobs and social attributes. In addition,my thesis also elaborates the confrontation of knowledge worker class to capital from the point of the mode of knowledge workers fighting against capital,as well as of the anthropological significance of laboring. The fourth part is "the concepts of capital and objectification in political economics of communication".In this part I chiefly tease out the concepts of capital and objectification, analyzing the logic of capital accumulation with particular examples, and I realize the influence of monopolistic media enterprise on public sphere.I also state the establishment of symbol, ideology and cultural hegemony, and finally discuss the problems of commodity fetishism and objectification from the dimensions of society and economy. My thesis is guided by dialectical materialism and historical materialism. It sets off from the core concepts and classical theories of Marxism, including mode of production, class, capital and objectification, etc.and teases out, analyzes and summarizes the political economics of communication of Mike Wayne.I wish I could help understand capitalist critical theory of media culture in the background of Internet era.Meanwhile I also provide a new theory which could be followed up to study nowadays development of western Marxism.
