Vocabulary is the foundation of a language and an essential part of teaching materials.Currently,Chinese Language is the commonest textbook used in the Chinese schools of Cambodia. However,as a textbook for the students' compulsory course, the content of Chinese Language has been increasingly unsatisfactory in today's teaching scenarios. In addition, the author finds, through actual teaching, that many problems exist in the vocabulary compilation of the textbook, which leads to the current situation that "it is difficult for the teacher to teach and the students to learn".The classroom teaching of Chinese Language is based on vocabulary,so vocabulary teaching is both the key point and the pain point. In this case, how to teach vocabulary more effectively becomes a pressing problem, and it is therefore necessary to conduct a systematic study of the vocabulary in the textbook. At present, most of the studies on Cambodian Chinese language education focus on the current educational situation in Cambodia and the textbook Chinese Language,of which the study of the textbook puts emphasis on texts and after-class exercises rather than vocabulary. In contrast, this paper carries out an analysis, from the perspective of vocabulary,of the first volume of Chinese Language for grade six students(here in after referred to as the 1st volume).Specifically, the systematic investigation into the 1st volume consists of the following aspects: the total number of disyllabic and polysyllabic words, word repetition frequency, vocabulary formation, lexical difficulty, and new vocabulary. With regard to the method of research,a text corpus has been established based on the texts and new vocabulary of the 1st volume. The online word segmentation system EGouZ is then used to count and analyze the repetitive rate of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words, and the results of data are imported into Excel to be added up or calculated by the formula.EGouZ,with the function of part-of-speech tagging,is also used to analyze the vocabulary formation of the texts. In addition,to determine the lexical difficulty,Python is run to encode the data of the repetition frequency of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in the 1st volume, which are then compared with those in the Vocabulary Syllabus for HSK Level 1 to 6 and the Outline of Chinese Vocabulary Levels. Finally, through the WJX platform, online questionnaires are filled by teachers and students, and the results are also analyzed.By the means of theories plus empirical data, the author gets to know how the vocabulary of the 1st volume is taught by teachers and learnt by students in actual scenarios. As mentioned above, the text corpus used as the base of the paper is the first volume of Chinese Language for grade six students. After careful research and analysis, the statistical results give the data of a single text, including the total number of disyllabic and polysyllabic words, word repetition frequency, and vocabulary formation, and also the data of all texts, including the total number of words, word repetition frequency and lexical difficulty. In conclusion, some problems exist in the1 st volume, such as too many disyllabic and polysyllabic words,high-frequency words of a single text that are seldomly repeated in other texts, unreasonable vocabulary formation, too many words beyond the teaching syllabus, not very practical and overly high lexical difficulty. To address these problems, the author has proposed corresponding suggestions about vocabulary compilation in Chinese Language with reference to relevant teaching materials and theories, aiming to provide an idea of vocabulary teaching for TCSL teachers as well as a new perspective for vocabulary research on Chinese Language.
