Jin Bu is a nationalized Chinese textbook commonly used in the UK.Contents related to Chinese culture are shown in the textbook.Noticing that studies on the cultural contents of this textbook are quite weak,especially in teaching practice,this thesis divides the cultural contents into two parts,namely “general cultural knowledge” and “comunicative cultural knowledge”.By classifying and analyzing the cultural contents it covers while giving detailed examples for explaination,the thesis argues that Jinbu contains more cultural elements than other Chinese textbooks of the same kind,and the amount of general cultural knowledge is much more than the cultural knowledge with comunicative function.This thesis,with its author conducted questionnaires with the Y7 and Y8 students and interviews with local Chinese teachers one by one in Coventry Finham Park School,also explores the application of Jinbu to teaching practice.Students using this text book for over one year give positive feedback and achieve noticeable improvement in grade while teachers think highly of the textbook,holding the belief that Jinbu consists of contents related to the British GCSE test,and thus would help students prepare better for the GCSE test.Teachers also point out the antiquated knowledge,the overabundance of vocabularies in the textbook and the incompitability between the cultural contents and students' ability in the textbook.Based on the above research and the overall analysis,this thesis suggests that,as for the compilation of Jinbu,not only should the selection of cultural contents be more comprehensive and diversity but also a balance should be kept between time effectiveness and perspicacity.And all the languages used in this book should be more communicative and authentic.In addition,noticing that some problems of the application of Jinbu to teaching in the UK such as the excessive vocabularies of the textbook,redundant and outdated culture content and insufficient teaching resources,correspoding suggestions for are provided in this thesis.
