With the further development of globalization, English has increasingly become an an important tool for worldwide cultural exchange. Language and culture are inseparable,therefore, English teaching should attach importance to cultural teaching, especially the cultivation of culture awareness, namely the cognition to the diverse culture in the worldwide, critical understanding of different culture. However, English culture teaching is weak in the teaching practice and studying the cultural content in English textbook and how they are presented are of great significance.This study sorts out all the cultural content and the ways of presentation in senior high school English books(PEP edition) and designs a framework for English cultural content analysis. Research focuses primarily on the features of the cultural content selection and the way they present, and try to put forward possible solutions to the existing problems.Through the study, it is found that cultural content mainly belongs to spiritual culture,with knowledge culture, behavioral culture and psychological culture taking a higher percentage than that of art culture. Institutional culture is not enough. In addition, the target language culture still holds an absolute advantage, while comparative culture is under insufficient input. As for the the presentation, the cultural content are averagely distributed in every book; their presentation depends heavily on the combination of words and pictures; questions and topic discussions are set more than tasks. Finally, this paper suggests that institutional culture and comparative culture should be added and ways of presentation should be diversified, especially the setting of tasks should be strengthened. |
