As an important quality,critical thinking can promote the overall development of students and help students better adapt to society.The scientific thinking in the core literacy of biology includes critical thinking,requiring students to use scientific thinking such as critical thinking to explore the phenomena of life and nature,and to examine and demonstrate social issues.It is obvious that critical thinking is indispensable.The way of thinking is getting more and more attention from everyone.HPS education refers to education about the history of science,philosophy of science,and sociology of science.This paper aims to study the role of HPS education in the development of students' critical thinking.The research done in the paper is as follows:First,through reading the literature,the concepts of HPS education and critical thinking,the status quo of research at home and abroad,and the relationship between the two are reviewed.Secondly,in order to understand the current critical thinking level of high school students,this study uses a questionnaire survey method to investigate students in the first and second grades to understand their critical thinking tendency and critical thinking skills.The survey results show that students' critical thinking tendency and critical thinking skills are at a medium level.In the critical thinking tendency,the truth is sought,the system is at a neutral level,and the open mind,analysis,self-confidence,curiosity,The five dimensions of cognitive maturity have a strong tendency;the survey also analyzes the differences in critical thinking levels among students of different genders,grades and classes.The results show that from a gender perspective,girls' critical thinking tendencies and skill levels are higher than boys.From the grade level,the first-grade students have higher levels of critical thinking than the second-year students,but the level of critical thinking skills is lower than that of the second-year students.From the class type,the critical thinking tendency and critical thinking skills of science class students are higher than those of liberal arts class students.On the basis of understanding the students' current critical thinking level,this study also uses experimental research methods to explore the role of HPS education in the cultivation of critical thinking,and attempts to cultivate students' critical thinking in the middle school biology classroom teaching through HPS teaching mode.Before and after the experiment,the critical thinking measurement tools with certain reliability and validity were used to measure and analyze the critical thinking tendency and critical thinking skills of the students.The experimental results show that the students' critical thinking tendency has improved after the experiment,mainly in the two levels of open thinking and self-confidence;while the students' critical thinking skill level has no obvious difference before and after the experiment,indicating The HPS teaching model has no significant effect on the improvement of students' critical thinking skills.The specific reasons need further analysis.
