International education has become a general trend in the context of globalization As the representative country of Western culture, the United States attracts many Chinese students with its advanced technology and strong cultural influence. However, due to the great differences in history and culture between China and the United States, international students' cross-cultural adaptation and cultural conflict is a social issue in the spotlight. The trade war between China and the United States has escalated during the tortuous development, and the subsequent reduction in the number of international students, the tightening of visa policies, and anti-China sentiments on social media have added new difficulties to the cross-cultural adaptation of the international students. As a medium, social media can help international students get daily information about the United States, communicate with others quickly and easily, and finally help them to better integrate into American societyBased on Bailey's cultural adaptation theory and Phil and Turner's social identity theory, this paper uses questionnaire surveys and in-depth interview research methods to combine quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the usage of social media of Chinese students, the cross-cultural obstacles they face, and how they use social media as the toll of conducting cross-cultural adaptation to better integrate Chinese and Western cultures and locate their own cultural identity in American culture in the context of Sino-US trade warThrough research, the author draws four conclusions.First, the Sino-US trade war has no significant effect on the use of social media by international students.Secondly, the better the English of individual international students, the lower the dependence on social media and the stronger the ability of cross-cultural adaptation.Third, individuals of different genders, ages, and educational backgrounds did not differ significantly in their use of social media and their ability to adapt across cultures. Finally, the impact of trade war on international students is inversely proportional to their degree of adaptation to the US culture, and this influence will also promote their inclination to spread Chinese cultureIn addition, the authors found a clear relationship between the use of social media and cross-cultural adaptation.International students can use social media to resolve some of their discomforts with American culture, and social media use behaviors can also reflect their cross-cultural adaptability. At the same time, there is also a clear link between the dissemination of Chinese culture by international students and their recognition of multiculturalism.By disseminating Chinese culture, the people of the host countries around the international students have more recognition of Chinese culture, and in the collision of Eastern and Western cultures, international students have also been more inclined to maintain a multicultural identity, thereby improving their ability to adapt to other cultures.
