At the moment China is in a process of peaceful rise, and the exchanges with the world have become more frequent, foreign students have become a very important part of communication between China and the rest of the world. How do foreigners adjust to life in China, what roles do new media, especially, WeChat play in their cross-cultural communi cati on, are al I research worthy questions. This study’s research objects are foreign students i n Ti anj i n, the research i s conducted wi th the hel p of questi onnaires and participatory observation, the objective of the research is to find how does new media contribute to social capital of foreign students, how does it develop student’s cross-cultural communication ability, what is the mechanism, how does it operate and what is the effect.On one hand, this research can provide some decision making suggestions for university management and departments of foreign affairs in charge of recruiting foreign students, improve cross-cultural communication ability in relevant institutions in China, enhance the soft power of China; at the same time, on theoretical level, this study can also promote progress of cross-cultural communication theory in the new media environment.
