Classical Chinese poetry is a splendid pearl in China's culture and art history because of its rich cultural connotation and artistic charm.84 classical Chinese poetries(not including poetries recommended for after-class reading),which is a considerable quantity,are included in unified Chinese textbooks of junior high school.The teaching of classical Chinese poetry is an instrumental part in Chinese reading instruction with many difficulties.Our survey on the situation of classical Chinese poetry reading instruction in junior high school showed an unsatisfactory result,partly because neither teachers nor students pay enough attention to the learning of classical poetry.It is hard to improve students' ability to appreciate classical poetries,let alone to understand the cultural charm rooting in classical Chinese poetries.This thesis intends to explore approaches of applying “Close reading ” to the teaching of classical poetries and improving the teacher and student's ability to appreciate poetries,in order to leave a positive effect on classical Chinese poetry instruction and then upgrade the teaching quality of Chinese in junior high school.This thesis is composed of four parts:The first part is an introduction,mainly about the origin of our research,a review of current researches and approaches used by the thesis.The second part is a survey on the application of “Close reading ” in the classical Chinese poetry reading instruction in junior school.Two types of questionnaire designed respectively for students and teachers were used to analyze problems in the current classical poetry learning and causes of problems.And then this part stated the importance of the application of “Close reading ”to classical poetry instruction.The third part which is significant in the whole thesis,mainly demonstrated detailed application of “Close reading ” to the instruction to junior students for learning classical Chinese poetry.To begin with,this part showed the application of intensive reading in lesson preparation.During lesson preparation,the teacher shall experience three phases including literal comprehension of the text,in-depth understanding of the text and deep insight of the text,so as to achieve close reading;then the thesis discussed contents in classical Chinese poetries requiring intensive reading: the title,annotations,key words and sentences,image and artistic conception,expression skills and learning-assistance system;at the end this part made a discussion on specific strategies of using close reading in the teaching of classical Chinese poetry.The fourth part is an application example of close reading in classical poetry reading instruction for junior students.Taking “The Old Charcoal-Seller” by Bai Juyi as an example,which was included in the unified Chinese textbook of the second volume of Eight Grade,this paper displayed contents in the poetry to be read intensively and relevant approaches for intensive reading to provide a specific reference for Chinese mandarin teachers in junior high school.
