Geographic image is the most vivid and intuitive language in geography,and it plays an important role in geography teaching in middle schools.Contour map is a common type of geographic images.The study of contour map is helpful to improve students' ability of observation,imagination and comprehensive thinking.The study of contour map is the key of geography teaching in junior high school,and it is the basis of learning other contents of geography.During the teaching practice of R middle school in Lanzhou city,the author found that the students in this school had great difficulty in learning contour maps,and there were many areas for improvement in the teaching of contour maps for teachers in this school.In order to understand the current situation of junior middle school students' geographic contour map learning,the author combs and summarizes the research situation of the contour map at home and abroad.Based on the Geography Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition),the author compiles a questionnaire and test questions on the current situation of junior middle school students' geographic contour map learning.A questionnaire survey and test were conducted among 164 students of three grades in R Middle School of Lanzhou City.The survey found that the status quo of R middle school students' contour map learning in Lanzhou city can be summarized as follows:(1)Students' low awareness and interest in contour map.(2)Students' learning effect is not good,learning methods are single.(3)Teachers' teaching methods are dull and rigid,and there are no new ideas.(4)Differences in performance between different student groups.(5)Students' low analytical and applied skills.(6)Learning effects of different learning projects are obviously different.Referring to the previous literature,combining with their own teaching experience and excellent teaching cases,the author puts forward six pertinent suggestions for the current situation:(1)Teachers can improve students' understanding of contour maps by summarizing and reviewing.They can enhance students' interest in learning from three aspects: emphasizing the importance of geographical contour maps,emphasizing classroom introduction and improving their self-accomplishment.(2)To improve students' learning methods,it is necessary to make clear the interpretation steps of contour map,master the interpretation skills of contour map and draw contour map to help them understand.(3)Teachers can use examples and visual objects,use geographical practice activities,and introduce modern educational technology to assist teaching,thereby improving teaching effect.(4)Pay attention to the differences between groups and individuals of students,flexibly apply teaching methods according to different groups,and teach students according to their aptitude.(5)Teachers should attach importance to the cultivation of students' ability of isogram analysis and application in the teaching process,and strengthen the training of these two abilities.(6)Teachers can break through the weak points of students' learning effectively.
