Chinese students are the important part of the strategies of developing China through science and education and strengthening the country through human resource Implement the strategy of reinvigorating China through human resource development.And they are also the important force to promote innovating development of social economic.The construction of its media image is not only related to its own reputation,but also an important link in the Communication Chain of National Image.The New York Times,as the mainstream media in the United States,has great influence in the world,and its image of Chinese students can not be underestimated.It will directly affect the public's understanding of the Chinese students and also also related to the international community's interpretation of China's national image.Therefore,It is of great practical significance to study the relevant reports of the New York Times on Chinese students and to understand the media image of Chinese students constructed by the western mainstream media.This paper takes the New York Times as the target media,and chooses 159 reports on Chinese students from 2003 to 2018.Based on the framework theory,it makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the reports,tries to find out the image of Chinese students in the New York Times.In view of the problems existing in the New York Times' construction of the image of Chinese students,this paper also reflects on how to present a comprehensive and authentic media image of Chinese students.This paper includes an introduction and three chapters.Introduction part explains the origin of the study and literature review.In terms of literature review,this paper combs the research on media image at home and abroad and image of Chinese students on the basis of predecessors,and then establishes the research methods,significance and innovation points of this paper.The first chapter is an empirical study of the media image of Chinese foreign students in the New York Times Including research design and content analysis.This paper orientates the media of the New York Times,explains the principle of sample selection,and constructs a research category based on the framework theory.Starting with the theme,source,genre,position,region and gender of the reports,it analyses the main contents and tendencies of the reports in the New York Times on Chinese students.The second chapter systematically analyses the types of media image of Chinese students constructed by New York Times,and points out the problems and deviations in its construction.Firstly,according to the results of content analysis and the interpretation of typical cases,this paper summarizes the main media image types of Chinese students constructed by New York Times from the perspectives of survival,life,study,identity,words and deeds,and psychology.Secondly,it reveals the problems of the New York Times in shaping the image of Chinese students,that is,excessive negative construction,deviation of reporting theme,imbalance of agenda setting and lack of discourse of reporting subject.The third chapter discusses the causes and Enlightenment of the media image construction of Chinese students in the New York Times.Firstly,from the four aspects of ideology,national interests and American journalism concepts,and the factors of Chinese students,this paper discusses the influencing factors of New York Times in the media image construction of Chinese students.It further explains the influence of the ideological differences between China and the West,the constraints of the national interests of the United States and the American news concept on the perspective and value judgment of media reporting.Finally,the paper reflects on the problems and deviations in the reports of the New York Times.It is pointed out that the media in China and Chinese students should grasp the sovereignty of discourse and enrich their own image,Pay attention to balanced reporting and pronounce actively to cope with false reports about Chinese students.On the basis of respecting facts,we should pay attention to narrative strategies,enhance our international communication ability.Relying on the joint efforts of domestic media and Chinese students,we can present a comprehensive and true media image of Chinese students,and also make contributions to shape a positive national image for our country.
