Using model essay in writing teaching and learning is a common practice that has existed for a long time at home and abroad.However,a lot of research showed that model essay's influence on student writing is not stable: sometimes it produces promotion effects,sometimes these effects are little,and in other situations even negative effects.Writing is essentially a creative thinking activity,and model essay reading will guide imitation to a large extent.What effect does read model essays have on students' writing performance as a whole? What kind of model essays have a positive impact on students' writing performance? Is the influence of model essays on student writing performance related to its ways of presentation? There is currently no systematic research on these issues.In view of above,this study aims to take junior high school students as subjects,try to explore the influence of different kinds of model essays on students' writing performance,and to analyze the mechanism behind them.In study 1,we explore the influence of reading model essay on students' writing performance and which kind of students could be influenced by reading model essay.Two experimental condition,with or without model essay when writing,was set up.And recruited 75 junior high school students in two classes.The result found that:(1)reading model essay can improve students' writing performance.(2)the promotion of reading model essay on students' writing performance and writing creativity is influenced by students' writing ability: reading model essay can improve the writing performance of students with low writing ability,but it is not effective for students with high writing ability.In study 2,we studied the influence of the quality of model essay on the effect of reading model essay.We choose two kind of model essay,general model essay and creative model essay as experimental materials and 77 junior high school students as participants.The results show that(1)students in general model group achieved higher score writing structural creativity and writing language creativity,but their total writing score and conception creativity score have no obvious difference from creative model essay group students.(2)among low writing ability students,the writing performance and creativity is better in general model essay condition than in creative model essay condition.(3)among high writing ability students,their writing structural creativity and writing language creativity score are higher in general model essay group.In study 3,we manipulated the ways of presenting model essay.In conditions of model essay with and without interpretation,we studied the influence of interpretation in model essay reading.We found that(1)there is no significant difference in the writing performance of the participants in the two condition.(2)among low writing ability students,students in the condition of model essay with interpretation performed better that other students with only model essay,and the difference achieved marginal significant.(3)high writing ability students in two model essay conditions have no significant difference in performance.In summary,we can draw the following basic conclusions:(1)Reading model essay can improve students' writing performance.(2)The influence of reading model essay is more significant among lower writing ability students.(3)The general model essay is more conducive to improving students' writing performance than the creative model essay;(4)To some extent,the interpretation of model essay could also improve the effect of model essay learning.
